Mr Tui Monk (Rewanui) returned by last evening’s express after a holiday visit to Ashburton. Mr D. Comen and Miss E. Wilson of Christchurch, are the guests of Mr and Mrs T. Franklin, Cobden. .Miss A. M. 'Tassall, Cobden, has oeen successful in passing Pitman’s Shorthand Teachers’ Diploma examination. M’ss M. O’Donnell (to Ward), Mr and Mrs C. Stuart and Mr E. Cotter, were passengers by yesterday’s express to Christchurch. Z-j Washington cable states that the U.S. House of Representatives has passed and sent to the Senate a Bili directing the deportation of Harry Bridges, the former C. 1.0. leader on the Pacific Coast, who is an Australian. Mr Arthur. Samuel Ballinger, one of the most distinguished rifle shots New Zealand ever had, died at We 1 - lington on Saturday at the age of 80 years. Deceased won ’practically every shooting contest worth while, including three New Zealand championship belts. Mr J. H. Wearne, of Black’s Point, received the sad news on Tuesday or the death of his sister, Mrs Joseph Pryor, formerly a well-known resident of Black’s Point, and now of Auckland. Many friends will extend their deepest sympathy to the bereaved family, A motion of condolence with the. relatives of the late Mrs T. Furlong, was carried in silence at last evening’s meeting of the West Coast Rugby League. The president (Mr P. Blanchheld) stated that deceased was the mother of Mr T. Furlong, Ngahere’s delegate. Major G. H. Gray. M.C, N.Z.T.S.has been appointed officer’commanding the sth Training Battalion, Trentham, and leaves to-day to take over his new post. Major Gray has been a battalion commander at Burnham for the last 18 months, and at one stage before the war was in command of the Ist Battalion, Nelsen, Marlborough and West Coast Regiment. Flight-Lieutenant Russell Merriman MacKenzie, and Flight-Lieutenant Richard George Maddox. have been awarded the Air Force Cross for distinguished service. Anocner R.A.F. officer, Acting Flight-Lieutenant Colin Falkland Gray, .has been awarded a bar to the D.F.C. His citation says Gray has destroyed a further eight enemv planes, making his, total of victories seventeen, and in addition he orobablv destroyed a further nine enemv planes. FlightLieut. Gray always has shown the greatest enthusiasm and been of great assistance to his Squadron Commander.
