It was decided to consider the position of soldiers’ subscriptions when the occasion arose. It was decided to offer free membership to two members of each secondary school. Opening day was fixed for October 11. It was decided to hold a Yankee tournament on this day, commencing at 2 p.m. Last year’s Club Captain, Mr. E. Askew, congratulated the Club on its choice of a successor and wished the Club a successful season The following new members were elected: Mesdames E. Holder, Alford, Nicholls, A. Stollery, Misses J. Walsh, Casey, McGreevy, Bowden, B. Phbbs, B. Douglas, R. I Coppersmith, B. Mara, M. Hansby, M. Scanlon, Messrs C. McHerron, E. Holder, J. Phibbs, A. Stollery, L. Fox and T. Hansby. In presenting his annual report, the President, Mr. H Lockey, said that the membership last season was slightly less than that of last year. Total membership was 50 (as against 60 previously). Continuing. Mr. Lockey said: The Club entered only one team in the SubAssociation Competition owing to several members having to attend military parades. Many keen games were played during the season and were greatly enjoyed by our players. The Club won the initial match for the Pullar Cup from the Denniston Club, withstood a challenge from Reefton, and finally lost the cup to St. John’s Club. The competition for the Walker Cup was. very keenly contested and the final match against St. John’s resulted in a win for the sister club by a narrow margin. Two or three Yankee tournaments conducted during the season proved most enjoyable, support from St. John’s and other i Clubs being much appreciated. Nearing the end of the season, an unofficial team visited Reefton, and after an enjoyable day’s play, were defeated by the Reefton Club. Prior to the opening of the season, repairs were effected to the pavilion, fences, etc., and drains were cleaned out. The Club is deeply indebted to the patron, Mr. C. F Schadick, for assistance rendered in this connection. However, an inspection of the courts, following the recent heavy winds, reveals that the fences have suffered badly and will need to undergo further repairs. The nets are .in good repair, out the courts are showing slight signs cf wear and really require a light top dressing. However, tne playing surface is still quite good. Ow,mg to the decrease in membership, our income from subscriptions also declined slightly. However, all accounts) nave been settled and bank interest provided for to the 30th. September, ±O4l. Tne balance-sheet shows mat our income slightly exceeded our expenditure and the bank overdraft is relatively reduced. Again, the thanKs of the Club are due to our energetic secretary, Mr. £'. Foote, tor ms untiring attention to all matters in the 'Club's interest. -‘Due to various reasons, the Club was unfortunate in losing several valued members. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Martin and Mrs. ueiisn transferred from the di.str.ct, anti Messrs Allen Kerr and C. Marrow enlisted for military service and nave since gone overseas. Mr. and Mrs. is. Askew are also on the eve of their departure from Westport. Both have been keen members and Mr. Askew, who filled the position of Club captain during the season, was also our ino. 1 player. To all tnese piayers, our sincere thanks are due for their Keen interest whilst members of our Club, and we trust that they will continue to derive pleasure irom the game wherever they may be. .n--lormation from various sources indicates that our members are lit and well, and it is the sincere wish of > every member that their heaiui may f be preserved, and that the day is not far distant when we snail again enjoy the pleasure of their company on the courts. Mr. Lockey conciudeu Oy thanking all those who nad helped the Club last season.
