KUMARA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent > The monthly meeting of the Kumara Borough Council was held on Thursday evening, when the Mayor, Mr A. B. Spiers, presided. A letter from a ratepayer re excessive valuation. was received. The Clerk was directed to inform him that the Council had no control over valuation,, and that if he thought the valuation excessive, he would have to forward his objection to the Valuation Dept.. Christchurch. The treasurer’s statement showed receipts at £228. and expenditure at £203. The Council were of the opinion that accounts should be sent in regularly and not after a lapse of time Cr Murphy (Chairman of the Public Works) reported on work done during the month. The pumps for the water scheme had not yet arrived. The Mayor reported that he had asked Mr Renton, when ordering the pumps, to also order an electric motor engine, and if the pelton wheel did not develop enough power, the electric motor could be installed. The action of the Mayor was endorsed by the Council, The Chairman of the Domain (Cr. Becker) reported that he had ordered timber to provide seating accommodation at the Recreation Ground The Chairman or Reserves (Cr. Rogers) reported that the fence at__the Cemetery needed repairing, '"an7l it was resolved that two cwt. of barbed wire be ordered for the purpose A letter from Smith Bros., picture proprietors, re putting heaters in Memorial Hall was received. The Clerk was instructed to write to the Social Security Dept.. Hokitika, and notify them that all the men on 'No. 13 Scheme would have to cease work when the subsidy was lowered to £4 per weeK per man. The C’erk was instructed to send in the names of all defaulting ratepayers to the Bprough solicitor. Cr. Hunt reported that.Jhe street light on Beach Road had" been out for over a weelc It was decided that Mr W. Evenden be informed of this. His Grace, Archbishop West Watson. administered Confirmation to candidates at Holv Trinity Church on Sunday morning last, tnere being a largp congregation. Mrs M. Fahev lunD., is at present visiting Christchurch. Mrs M. Clark and Mrs E. Rooney, Messrs John Reedy, Stan Thornley. W’ Nolan and James Fitzgerald, of this district, are at present patients in the Westland Hospital. Mrs K. Wallace, of Gisborne, who had been visiting her mother, Mrs MNicholas of Hohonu. has returned to the North Island. She was accompanied bv her sister, Miss Margaret N : cholas. who will spend a holiday in GisborneIt is understood that the Forty Aorp Tunnel at Dillmanstown has at last been nicked up, and is being nut in order for sluicing operations. This will be interesting to ex-Kumaraites, as this work has been a long and difficult Job_
