R.S.A. AND C.O's. p.A HASTINGS, Sept. 25. At the quarterly re-union of the Hastings R.S.A., the following resolution was passed to be forwarded to headquarters: That this meeting of returned soldiers of Hastings strongly supports the Dominion Executive' in the endeavour to have conscientious objectors and defaulters dealt with in a manner fair to the men overseas, and this country generally. DRIVERS’ AWARD. AUCKLAND, Sept. 25. Deep concern has been expressed among drivers, following the reported statement by Mr Semple, in Parliament, that prosecutions for breaches of the drivers’ award, in reference to working hours, would not be allowed to proceed, unless snecific instructions were given by him, said Mr L. G. Mathews, Secretary of the Auckland Drivers’ Union, in a statement to-day. The award, he said, was framed in accordance with the Transport Act, and under the terms 66 hours’ work were tho maximum to be worked in any one week. The Union took the strongest exception to the attitude adopted by the Minister, and his statement left the way clear for award breaches to be indulged in. The Union still had a number of workers engaged only casually, when they could be engaged in a full-time capacity, helping the war industry. While such a position existed, the Union would not agree to any addition to daily ana weekly hours, which, in the Union s opinion, were already excessive.
