George arrived yesterday from Christchurch, to take a position on th e Traffic staff of the Railways Department, Greymouth. Mr F. E. Carter, Paeroa, has been selected as the National candidate for the Thames seat against the sitting Government Member, Mr James Thorn. Private Frederick Eric Lindb.om, of Cobden,, who was previously reported as wounded and missing, hns now been reported as a prisoner of war. The following are guests at Revington’s Hotel; Miss L. M. Morrison and Private N Morrison, who was recently invalided home from the Middle East, left yesterday for* Christchurch, where they will reside. Mr G. Morrison is a patient in the Grey River Hospital. The following are guests at the Albion Hotel; Mr and Mrs Shaw. Mr M. Harton (Wellington), Mr and Mrs E. Flint. Master M. F. Flint, Messrs G. S. McHerron, W. M. Brooks (Christchurch). G. Te-arn, C. OLands (Dunedin), C. Newman, (. Johnston (Blenheim). Mr John Whitiski, formerly a gold miner, aged 81 years, was found dead in his hut near Reefton on Wednesday. Deceased had not been out for some days previously, and apparently he died in bed. He was a native of Poland, but had lived on the West Coast for the greater part of his life, and had been a resident of the Inangahua district for about forty years He was single, and leaves a brother, who resides in Goldsborough. Among the R.A.F. awards approved by the King, are the Companionship of the Bath, for Acting-Air Marshal F M. Drummond, who was horn ar. Perth (Western Australia) and is now Deputy A.O.C. in the Middle East; and Air Vice Marshal -A. Conningham, born at Brisbane, no 'y A.O.C. R.A.F ' group in the Middm East. Wing Commander G. E. Sampson, of Brisbane, now engaged on staff duties at. the headquarters or the Fighter Command, received the 0.8. E. There arrived in Auckland this week the new Provincial of th* l Marist Brothers. Rev. Brother Louis, who was born and educated at Invercargill. He was recently head of the Marist Brothers’ College at Randwick, Sydney, and was previously headmaster _pf St. Joseph’s College. Hunter's Hill., Sydney. He succeeds Rev. Brother Benignus. who was appointed provincial in 1932, and was the first New Zealand-born brother to hold the office in the Australian or Nevtf Zealand provinces. 111-health has’ been the main cause of the retirement of Brother Benignus, and he is in a private hospital to undergo an operation. In 1903 he was on the staff of Sacred Heart College, which opened that year, but shortly afterward he was transferred to Australia on account of ill-health. He returned in 1912 "and resumed duties at the college. He was appointed director in 1916, and from 1922 to 1925 he was director of the Brothers’ Training College at Tuak'au. He returned to Sacred Heart College in 1926 for his second period as director, which lasted until he was appointed provincial-
