SINGLE MEN FIRST
TO BE SENT OVERSEAS. TERRITORIAL TRAINING EXPLAINED. P.A. WELLINGTON, September 24. “Single fit men shall not be purposely kept back from the Expeditionary Forces without full and valid reasons,” said Hon. F. Jones, to-day, referring to the establishment of the Territorial -Cadres. “That is the firm intention of the Government. What is being aimed at in the establishment of the Cadres is the training of the Territorial, as fa r as possible, fo the standards of the Expeditionary Force It is realised that this wiil take time, and that' some members of the Territorials will becomp eligib’e for overseas service. It must not be forgotten that many in the Cadres may not be old enough for foreign service, but as thesp qualify to go overseas, their places will be t?ken by men whom thev_have trained. ’ “Action which already has been taken in emnloving women in various capacities—in the R.N.Z.A F. for instance —is evidence of the Government’s intention to release single fit men for service where it is satisfied that their duties can be carried out by women. It is evidence, too. that there is no idea of enabling single fit men to escape thei r obligations in any way.”
