CO-OPERATION AND THE NEW ORDER

BY

CO-OP.

In a series of four articles we shall endeavour to develop a workable plan and explain the implications of co-operation in shaping a New Order. Week by week the plan will be unfolded and explained under the following headings: (1) Introductory—Basic Principles. (2) What of the Plan? (3) The Plan.. (4) The Possibilities. Part (1) Introductory— Basic Principles We have read with interest opinions expressed by some of New Zealand’s leading figures and thinkers, on the New Order, and most have stressed the necessity for change from the Archaic Order of Capitalism to Socialism. Workers are deeply concerned as to their position after this bloody conflict from which every real New 1 Zealander believes the anti-Fascist allies will emerge victorious. It is in everyone’s hands to ensure we do not win the war and lose the peace. How to accomplish this is the question on everyone’s lips. They may know the objective, but what will be the method? Let us examine the basic principles which will make the New Order work. The slogan and execution must be "Co-operation in every phase of life” Very, pretty words, and a fine ideal, but how to accomplish this stupendous task of knitting together

one and a-half million odd New Zealanders to work towards that bright | goal? I We cannot legislate people to a I frame of mind compatible with our I Socialist objective, but our laws can merely control the situation as we move along the road to our New Order. Therefore, it is in the hands of each individual to win the peace. How? Firstly, we must look to the young people in our secondary schools, colleges and universities, and introduce into the curriculum studies along the lines which will tell them the truth of co-operation. Alternatively, sufficient lecturers would conduct at least weekly studies in each school. These children are the men and 'women to control to-morrow’s order. Give them the foundation knowledge, and the beauty of a lofty ideal will spur them on to ensure their world will be run on Christian principles. Secondly, our adults must be educated without fear or favour by medium of our radio over the national network. Tell them the unvarnished truth of the Socialist objective and a planned scheme of how we are going to get there. The workers want to hear how they must prepare themselves to carry the great projects to fruition. We know we have men and women inside and outside Parliament in New Zealand, who can tell them. Put these people on the air to educate New Zealanders. The workers know what they want. Let the leaders lead.
