Although on the whole the observance of the black-out regulations at Greymouth was quite good, there were still a few residences in which the fan-lights were not blacked outstated Inspector W. E. Packer, yesterday. Warnings had been given to residents in a few cases.

The Armed Forces Appeal Board will hear appeals on the West Coast next week, there being; sittings at the following centres Tuesday. Hokitika; Wednesday, Reef ton, Grevmouth, Thursday and. Friday. After three weeks’, term vacation, the Grevmouth Technical High School re-opened yesterday morning, with a normal attendance there oeing still a few absentees suffering from mumps and influenza. The only change in the staff was Miss I. .M. Wither, of Winton, who was appointed to the manual staff, to replace Miss E. G) Watt, who was appointee! to the Timaru Technical High School in the last term. Drs B. L. Wilson and C. Gorban, visited Ross recently to hold the examination of Mrs Stevenson s First Aid students. They were highlv pleased with the results and those successful being: Intermediate, Mr. D. Head. Elementary: Mesdames Collins, Ableson, Frew, Hadfield, Gough, Wadsworth, V. K} n S. Mun, I. Jones, Misses Herbert, J. Allan, H. Mitchell. R. Mithell, .J. Osmers. Mr. 3. Mitchell. The latest military postings relative to West Coast soldiers, are the following:—R. H. Chesterman, Kanieri to the Infantry Reconnaissance Carrier Crew Detachment, Trentham- R J. Mehrtens, Greymouth, to the Gun Detachment. Trentham Men of the former detachment will in future go to Trentham instead of to Burnham. The above mentioned men will leave here next Tuesday, along with other men posted, foi Trentham.

The Mayor (Mr A. B. Spiers) presided at a special meeting of the Kunara Borough Council -on Monday evening. The purchase of a pump for the water-supply was discussed, and it was decided to accept the offer of Levin and Co. to provide a Mo. 913 Myers Bulldozer pump, cost price £3B 10s. f.o.b. Wellington, the □umn to do the work reouired. provided the Borough supplies sufficient power. If the 'piirajp did not give satisfaction under these conditions, Levin and Co. are to take it back. The Mayor asked that all the Councillors present try to go to the pro-
posed power-site and inspect it. It was agreed to go on Saturday. The action of the 1 Government in reducing the grant to £4 per week of the No. 13 Scheme men employed bv the Borough was discussed, and all the Councillors were of the opinion that the Council could not make up the deficiencv of 18s per man per week. The clerk was instructed to point out the facts to the authorities, and protest against the reduction. The clerk was instructed to get in touch with a solicitor regarding rates.
