High Tides for September: Tuesday, 16 —5,45 a.m.; 6.28 p.m. Wednesday, 17 —7.2 a.m.; 7.32 p.m. Thursday, 18 —7.55 a.m.; 8.22 p.m. Friday 19 —8.42 am.; 9.3 p.m. Personal: Mr. Fred Atkinson, the wrestler, who gained a decision over Pat Meehan at Greymouth on Saturday, is visiting his people in Westport. Miss Molly Rees, of Grey Hospital nursing staff, who was a visitor to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Rees, Mill Street, has returned to Greymouth. The marriage took place at the Methodist Church, Greymouth, at 11 a.m. on Saturday’ of Mr. Robert Finlayson, only son of Mr. Robert Finlayson, Westport; to Miss Beulah Roberts, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roberts, of Westport, the bridegroom being half-back of the Buller team that, in the afternoon, lilted the Seddon Shield from the West Coast. The Rev. A. A Bensley, was the officiating clergyman. Mrs. C. Douthett acted as matron of honour, and Mr. W. Neighbours as best man. Members of the Buller Rugby team formed a guard of honour as the bridal party left the church. Later, the wedding breakfast was held at the residence of the bride’s aunt, Mrs. Roberts, when congratulatory speeches were made and good wishes offered.
Miss E. Kendon, leaves to-day for Ruatcria, Gisborne, to take up a: teaching appointment. The Town Clerk, Mr. A. Taylor, who has been visiting Greymouth, returns to Westport to-day. Mr. J. Radford, an inmate of Buller hospital, .is making a good recovery from his serious illness. Mrs R. Methven, returned to Westport on Saturday after spending a holiday with relatives in .Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. W. Taylor, who have been visiting Christchurch, returned to Westport during the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Roberts, who visited Greymouth for the marriage of their daughter to Mr. R. Finlayson, returned to Westport on Saturday. Mrs. A. Greener, accompanied .by her daughter, who has been visiting her father, Mr. M. McDonald, Taylorville, returned to Westport on Saturday. „ ~ The death took place in the Buller Hospital on Sunday morning of George Gilmour, who lived for a number of years at Millerton. He is a native of Australia, 61 years of age, and is survived by a sorrowing Wife, two sons and one daughter. His body will be taken to Christchurch for interment. Shield Winners: When the Buller Rugby team, winners of the Seddon Shield, returned yesterday afternoon from Greymouth, they were given a civic welcome by the Mayor, Mr. J. 1M Robertson. The Municipal Band met the players at the corne'r of Fonblanque and Palmerston Streets, and escorted them to the Post Office, where the Mayor made a speech congratulating the team on its excellent performance and the success of its mission to bring the Seddon ' Shield back to Westport. He thought a little 'bit of luck had gone Buller’s way. Replying, Mr. J. McEnaney, President' of Buller Rugby Union, said Buller would really have been unlucky not to have won, as on ine run‘of the play, they nad the better of the game. He thanked the public and the band for turning out in such numbers to give the boys the welcome that they had so well earned. Mr. V. Goodall. Manager of the team, also spoke, arid eulogised the players for their consistency in training and good work on and off the field. Mr. S. Stewart, the coach, replied, and added his measure of praise to the boys for their well-won honours. Mr. J. Fox, Captain, also spoke, thanking the manager and coach for work done and interest they had shown in the players. Mr. W. Negihbours (vice-captain), who kicked the field goal thht won the game, also briefly replied. Aid to Russia: At a well attended meeting of the Society for Closer Relations with Russia, at the Powell Memorial Hall on Sunday night, a Westport Branch was formed and the following executive appointed: Chairman: Mr. C. Friend; Secretary: Mr A. Fleming; Treasurer: Mr. J. Chapelhow; Executive: Messrs H. Hennessey, W. Ellison, T. Auld. A. Devescovie, W. P. Caldwell, W. Greenland, and Mrs. M. Bird. A speaker was arranged for a meeting tp be held next Sunday night, the subject being the objects of the Society. The Chairman stressed that the public should become acquainted with these objects, which were as follows: (a) To promote cultural, diplomatic and economic relations between the people of New Zealand and the people of the U.S.S.R.; <b> to do everything possible to help secure victory against the Nazi and Fascist aggressors. The Society was non-sectarian, and politically nonpartisan. It welcomed the membership of all persons willing to observe I this condition, and who subscribed to I the above objects. Golf Championships: Following are the results of the Westport Golt Club’s' Championship finals, played on Sunday in ideal weather—Senior: Boyes beat G. Slee, at the 37th. after a great struggle At the 18th. the match was all square, and at the 35th. Slee was 1 up. Boyes won the 36th. with a nice 4, squaring the match and went on to win the next hole. Intermediate: R. Macklow beat H. Maitland, 6 and 4. Junior: R. Wells beat A. Pain, 3 and 2. In the Jubilee Cup match played on Sunday, T. Park beat D. Francis at the 20th. hole.
