DOMINION MEWS
CIGARETTES FOR TROOPS WELLINGTON, August 26. Arrangements are being made to have packets of cigarettes sent on behalf of the people of the Dominion, by the National Patriotic Fund Board to New Zealand Forces overseas, i over-printed with the words “Patrio- • tic Issue,” instead of the gift anj nouncement being placed inside the packets. This step is being taken with a view to preventing a recurrence of the sales of gift cigarettes, and is in line with the recommendation made recently by the Overseas Commissioner, Col. Waite, who outlined several difficulties that had been met with in connection with gift cigarettes, but he considered the reports of their sale wore grossly exaggerated. Instead of discontinuing the gift issues, because of the difficulties, an endeavour should be made to make the scheme perfect.
