[Our Own Correspondent] HOKITIKA. July 24. Personal.—Mr C. M. ivialfioy, oi Wellington, arrived in Hokitika this morning. Mr J S. Langford returned this morning. Mr D. McGiil was a visitor here today. Word was received to-day .01 the death of Mr Michael Gridin, father or Mrs A. Neil, of the Hotel Westland. which took place at Wellington last night. The late rar Griffin leaves a family of three daughters, Misses Eileen, Ruth Griffin, and Mrs Ned. Driver Horace Arnold Dale, brother of Mr J. Dale, of Hokitika, in the latest list of casualties, is reported as wounded and still mis Sing. Shipping.—The Gael, which has taken a load of cement and fuel oil to Okuru, will call at Hokitika on Sunday, and load for Okuru a cargo of eauipment and supplies for Woods Whitebait Canning Factory, at the Pannga, sailing .on Monday afternoon The Hokitika is to arrive at midnight from Wellington, and will load timber for Wellington, sailing at noon on Saturday. Basketball —Saturday’s fixtures are: Koiterangi A v. Convent Sec. B (referee I. Wells); Koiterangi B v School A (Mr Batt); St. Mary's v. Victorians (I. Wells); Koiterangi B v School B (O Campbell; St. Pat’s v. School B (Mr Batt); Convent Sec. A v. Old Girls (M. McCormack); Koiteiangi A v. Sc-'A (Mr Batt). Nurses’ Bali.—A ba i kst even n : i organised by the Westland Hospital nurses on behalf of nurses serving with the forces overseas drew a very large attendance and proved most successful, and a profit, of £5O is expected. The hall was decorated with large ferns attached to the pillars while alcoves included a canteen. “General hospital,” “Mess room ’’ “dressing station,” and “convale cent depot.” Pictures of fronts on which nurses ha,ve been serving were displayed with a replica of the hospital ship “Manganui.” Mr Friedlander ran the canteen, and Mr A H. Lawn, who was a capable M.C. thanked the patrons on behalf of the nurses.. Returned soldiers present were Bernv McCormack. Ken Wallace and Jack Shivas, and Seaman Neil Roberts of the Navy, to whom a welcome was voiced. Also present were Dr. B. L Wilson (Superintendent Westland Hospital) and Mrs Wilson, Dr R. F Aitken and Mrs | Aitken Dr. Bellringer (Supt. oi the Mental’ Hospital) and Mis Bellringer, and Miss Ramsay (Matron of Westland Hospital). Home Guard.—At last evening's parade, platoon, physical and semaphore drill were engaged in. A special parade was announced, lor Sunday at 2 p m., when Brigadier O- . fl Meade, Southern Commander, will hold an inspection, and as he has valuable information to impart, a ! full muster is sneciallv desired. ;
