CHEESE PRODUCTION

REGISTRATION OF WORKERS. WELLINGTON, July 23. Hon. R. Semple stated tnat some hundreds of workers in the cheese manufacturing industry had not yet i'ulfiilled their obligations, under the Cheese Industry (Registration of Employment) Oraer, whereby men engaged in that industry, as well as those who at any time since' July 1, 1936, have been employee continuously in the industry for three months or more, were required to register ,by July 14. Mr. Semple urged those eligible to register to do so immediately. The order also requirect cheese factories to register, and supply certain information to enable prevision be made to meet labour requirements of the industry for the coming season. The Minister said that here again only a small number ot regi:derations were effected within the time limit, and he empnasisect the necessity for early registration. MEAT PRODUCTION. WELLINGTON, July 23. The need for a sheep farmer to receive the same measure of assistance in regard to stabilisation of the costs of production as has been granted to other industries, was advanced by Mr. H. D. Ackland (President) when addressing the Sheepowners' Federation conference, when opened to-day. He suggested that, in view of the difficulties facing the industry, there should be some plan fori the equalisation of meat returns, or 1 alternatively, that the Government should purchase the meat output for the period of the war. It would appear to be only reasonable, he said, to ask that the produce they had made available for export to Britain as part of the Dominion’s war effort, should be paid for in the same way that other Army requirements of all kinds must be paid for—that was, at a' price sufficient at least to cover the costs of production, the finance required for this to be a charge against the War Expenses Account, as in the case with other war materials.

The importance of every section of the community pulling its weight in the war effort was emphasised by Mr Ackland, in giving an assurance that the sheepfarmers would continue solidly with the Government, in the war effort.
