PIGS CHEAPER. P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, July 23. Fat cattle were in stronger demand, while pigs were not. at today’s Addington market, which Messrs H. Matson and Co. review ns follows: — Fat Lambs: The entry has now declined to a few pens, only 100 head being forward to-day, a mediocre lot, with only a few well finished sorts forward. The bulk of the yarding was round the 25s mark. Top price was 37s lOd. Fat Sheep: The entry was 4,000, or approximately 1,000 head more than last week. The sale was a good one. Values for all classes, except heavy ewes, were on a par with last week. The quality was excellent, though more heavy ewes were forward than the market could comfortably absorb, and ewes were therefore back Is a head. Top price for wethers was 39s lOd, and top price for ewes 30s lOd. Vealers: There was another small yarding, which included very few good runners. The sale was sound The top price was £lO 8s 6d for an outstanding heifer. Runners sold from £3 16s 6d to £lO 8s 6d; vealers, £2 10s Od to £4' 3s 6d; and calves. 8s to £3. Fat Cattle: There was a smaller entry of 452, against 577 last week. There was a further advance in prices. The quality of the penning was the best for some time. Ordinary cows were plentiful, but derelict sorts were fewer. dood cattle advanced by 20s to 25s a head; medium by 15s, and inferior by about 10s. a head. The sale was firm throughout. Good beef made' 44s to 47s per 100 lbs. Top price for steers was £24 12s 6d. Medium beef made 36s to 43s per 100 lbs. Top price lor heifers was £l7 2s 6d. Ordinary beef scld down to 325. Top price for cows was £l4 12s 6d. Store Cattle: There were no straight lines forward this week. The entry was of a very indifferent class, and met with a spasmodic sale. Buyers were apparently only interested in lines of young cattle. Dairy Cattle: The entry was 7o head, with few good sorts. The sale was a dragging one, and prices generally were lower than last week. Best second and third calvers sold to £l2; good third and fourth calvers from £7 10s to £10; others from £3 10s up. Best heifers fetched £l2; and others £6 to £9.
Fork: The entry was exceptionally heavy for this period of the year. Good quality pigs comprised over half the yarding. The sale eased at first by 2s to 3s a head. Over the last two races the price was fully 5s down cn the opening races. The average price per lb. was 7Sd to BSd. Bacon; There was a medium size entry. The sale was very erratic with prices, if anything, a shade easier all round? The average price per lb. was 6:7d to 71d. Store Pigs: There was a medium entry. The sale was excellent, except over the concluding stages, when few buyers were left. Good quality weaners were keenly sort, and met a good sale. Large stores were also firm. Weaners fetched 12s to 245; slips 22s to 245; and stores 25s to 41s 6d.
