[Our Own Correspondent]. WESTPORT, July 22. High Tides for July: Wednesday, 23—9.31 a.m.; 9.49 p.m. Thursday, 24 —10.10 a.m.; 10.28 p.m. Friday. 25—10.48 a.m.; 11.10 p.m. Saturday, 26—11.28 a.m.; 11.50 p.m. Shipping: The Poolta is in port loading coal for Auckland, and is expected to be despatched to-night. The Kiwitea is in port loading coal for Auckland, and will probably be despatched to-morrow. The Wingatui is due from Wellington on Friday with general cargo, and loads coal for return to the same port. The Totara is expected from Wellington on Saturday to load coal for return to Wellington. The Titoki is expected from Wanganui on Thursday to load coal for Nelson.

Personal: Mr. A. D. Spencer, Government Physical Drill Instructor, returned on Saturday from a visit to Hokitika and Greymouth. MesSrs. R. Weemck (Westport) and G. O. Crockett (Karamea), nave been passed medically lit and have been provisionally selected for training as pilots in the R.N.Z.A.F. Mr. J. Johnston, Inspector of Schools, arrived by service plane from Nelson yesterday, and Mr Cummings, Senior Inspector, arrives today. Mr. A. J. Benjamin, of Westport, has been appointed relieving engineering instructor at the Westport Technical High School in place of Mr. G. G. McAra, who is now an instructor at the Wigram Aerodrome. Soldiers’ Relations Club: The Soldiers’ Relations Club held their fortnightly meeting on July 17, and during the afternoon the memoers packed, wrapped and posted four valuable parcels to their soldier relations overseas. Mrs. Farrell ana Mrs. Tanner were appointed as representatives to the local Patriotic Welcome Home Committee. Three new members were duly welcomed and enrolled as members. The hostesses, Mrs. Fox and Miss Wells, served a very dainty afternoon tea. The meeting closed with the singing of “God Defend New Zealand ’’

Child Injured: When she fell from a bucket on which she was standing on Sunday, Marie Lambert, aged four, fractured her left arm. She was admitted to the Buller District Hospital, where her condition is reported as satisfactory. Education Board: The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board was held on Monday. The Hon. W. H Mclntyre (Chairman), and all members were present, except Mr. Barltrop, who was grantee leave of absence’ through illness. The Education Department informed the Board that the question ot erection of a new school at Murchison must stand over till more urgent works have been done. Reporting on an interview with the Department in connection with a grant to cover the cost of erecting a new school at Westport North, the Chairman said the building plans were now being considered by the Building Co-ordinal ion Committee Wellington, and he hoped authority to call tenders would be received soon, also for authority to accept the Public Works Department offer for clearing 'and levelling Westport North new site The Board declined Westport School Committee's request for a grant to cover the cost cf paying an assistant caretaker at Westport South School. F. Lowe was granted a lease of an additional portion of Oparara School site at 15s per annum. Stockton Committee is to be asked to find part of the cost of certain repairs to school windows. The Board finalised the transfer of Section 61, Denniston, from the Board to the Crown Department, for authority to dispose of the old school buildings at Denniston by public tender for each building, which will give the Denniston public an opportunity of acquiring same. The Education Department informed the Board that boys of 18 years of age in post primary schools were Hable for territorial service, and must be given leave to attend camp. Blaketown School Committee made an offer for the piano now in Punakaiki School, which has been closed. The Board declined the offer and declined to offer the piano to the Barrytown Committee to be kept there at the pleasure of Nelson Education Board. The Director of . Westport Technical High School notified the Board of the resignation of Mr. Jope, one of Nelson Education Boards representatives! on the Board of Managers. On the motion of Mr. Harkness, the Board decided to forward Mr. Jope a letter of thanks for his excellent services as Education Board’s representative for nine years and appointed Mr. Stephen Atkinson, of Westport, as his successor. Westport Committee wrote re boundaries of Westport North and Westport South School districts. The Board decided that Westport Schools boundaries will be Buller River o the west, the sea on the north. Orowaiti on the east, and the borough boundary of Stafford Street on the south, with Brougham Street as the dividing line between the districts. The Secretary pointed out that parents living outside these disl) 7 c ts who have children attending either of Westport schools, are qualified to attend and vote at the do P s . edold pF® meeting in their school district. 1 resignation of Mr. J. Mason (acting chairman), S. Stewart, r. Foote. J. Feehan T. Scanlon,, r. Woodward, C. Robertson and tne Secretary, Mr. W. Craddock. Apologies lor absence were ’ received from Messrs V. Goodall, J. McEnaney, and R. Pratt. R. Williams and I. Tyler were added to the United Club’s list subject to their receiving clearances from their previous ciubs, and subject to their applications being countersigned. Notilication that the West Coast Union had decided to play Seddon Shield matches under protest was received. Suggested dates for Shield games were: West Coast v. Marlborough. August 2; v. Golden Bay August 16; v. Nelson, August 30; v. Buller, September 13. The Buller Union approved of these dates. A letter received from the Marlborough Union stated that as West Coast had decided not to run the S'eddon Shield districts’ primary schools’ tournament, the Marlborough Union would take charge of this tournament. A suggested date for the start of the tournament was August 26, which would mean that teams would have to travel on August 25. However, if the entries were smaller than usual, it was suggested that teams assemble on August 26 and begin play on August 27. It was decided to notify the Miarlborough Union that these dates were acceptable and that Buller would be sending a team. A letter from the White Star Club stated that this Club’s third grade team would be unable to fulfil its fixture at Westport on July 26 with the Hokitika Kiwi Club’s thirds, as the latter team was unable to secure transport to Westport on this date. Because of this it was asked that permission be granted for the game to be played on August 2. It was decided to accede to this request. The Secretary’s action in lending a set of jerseys to the Rover Club for a patriotic match, was endorsed. It was

also decided to lend the Ranger Club a set of jerseys for a similar match. A motion that the West Coast Union be thanked for the way in which it looked after the Buller team was passed. Mr. Foote said that as a result of there being only two teams left in the junior competition, the Star team had to travel to Denniston every second Saturday, thus involving both players and the Club in extra expense. It was pointed • out that the Union could do nothing about this and that there were only two more Saturdays’ play needed to finalise the competition. It was decided to write to the Pirate Club for an explanation of why their third grade team did not fulfil its fixture with Old Boys last Saturday.
