Crew of H.M.S. “Lady Somers” RESCUERS WAIT HOURS IN DANGER. (Rec. 7.40). GIBRALTAR, July 22 The boldness shoxvn by a Spanisn tanker, the “Campeche/’ which stood by for two hojurs, in the danger area, in order to save them, has been revealed by the crew of His Majesty’s ship, “Lady Somers. the members of the crew stated that two submarines attacked the “Lady Somers,” firing at her torpedoes almost simultaneously. One submarine scored a hit astern. Then it came to the surface, but it crash-dived when the ship opened fire. Five minutes later a second submarine came to the surface, but it also disappeared vertically after the ship fired. The “Lady Somers” began settling down. The crew took to the boats, except the Captain and the crew of one gun. which they kept firing to scare off the submarines.
Five hours later, a second torpeuo struck the Lady Somers.. There was a terrific explosion, but those aboard were all sewed with the rest of the crew of the “Lady Somer’s.”

(Rec. 9.40). MADRID, July 22. At the Spanish port of Vigo a Spanish trawler has landed 25 survivors from a British merchantman The trawler picked them up after thev had been for twenty day.-, in an open boat. . The merchantman's crew In all totalled 164. The other 139 took to the boats. Their fate is unknown. The ship was voyaging between Hull and Gibraltar.
