EIRE’S RESOLVE
TO RESIST ANY INVADER Mr De Valera’s Declaration [Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] DUBLIN, July 18. Mr Eamonn De Valera, the President, replied to a debate on external affairs, in the Dail Eireann. Before Mr De Valera replied, Mr James Dillon, Deputy-Leader of tne Cosgrave (Opposition) Party, caused a sensation in the Dail by advocating Eire’s entry into the war. He said that they should ascertain, precisely, what Britain and America required to ensure success against the Nazi attempt at world conquest. He did not think that Irish troops should be sent but thought Ireland ought to afford Britain and America all accommodation that they required within Irish territory, including naval and aerial bases. A gap had been opened in the lifeline between Britain and America, he said, and Ireland was in a position to close it. Mr Cosgrave, Leader of the Party, dissociated himself from Mr Dillon’s speech. ' According to the London “Daily Express,” Mr De Valera wanted Mr Dillon’s speech suppressed. The Eireann Censor later passed the speech for publication in Britain. In his reply to the debate, Mr De Valera said: “If anybody attacks us, no matter from what side, every one of us can die for a just cause.” “If we are attacked, it will be by one of the big nations. We must face that, and we are prepared to face it. We are determined to live our own lives,” he concluded. North Ireland Arrest A NATIONALIST DETAINED. (Rec. 8.30). LONDON, July 17. Rt. Hon. Mr Morrison (Home Secretary), states that the Government has placed under detention Cahir Healy, Member of the Northern Ireland Parliament for County Fermanagh Seat, and a former Member of the House of Commons, who also is a well-known writer on Irish life and political and national subjects. Mr Morrison stated that “the detention of Cahir Healy was made because the Home Secretary had reaI sonable cause to believe that he had i recently been concerned in acts prejudicial to public safety, or defence of the realm, or in preparation of, or the instigation of such acts, and that, by reason thereof, it was necessary to exercise control over him.”
