NEAR THE MILLION
All Purposes Appeal P.A. WELLINGTON, July 18. “There is only 14U.000 to come in to reach the total aimed at, .£l/000,000. in the All-Purposes patriotic appeal,” stated Mr Abel to-night. “Tne provincial totals are: Wellington £250,700; Auckland £221,000; Canterbury £118,000; Otago £104.000; Taranaki £70,000; Hawke’s Bay £54,500; Nelson £37,500; Southland £35,u00; East Coast £27,000; Westland £23,100; Marlborough £18,000; total £O6O,iOJ. This is an advance of £42,000 in tne last 10 days. Of this amount £35,000 is from Wellington Province, mainly from Wanganui’s line effort. This is the only major zone known to have more than doubled its quota. Otago has concluded its comforts for lighters appeal and raised £34,000, and has now launched a special appeal for its quota of air raid relief for Great Britain This is £9,300.” He said the Wellington provincial figures were made up, as follows; London anneal £17,000; 'Metropolitan £lO3 r~a nlli £43,085; Wairarapa £29,630; Palmerston North £17,300; Feiiding ' xta,4lo; Levin £11.960; Taumarunui £5,975; Taihape £4 650; Marton £3,300; Waimarino £1 944; total £250,700. ’ Taihape recently held a cattle sale whicn real ised £2,300 and appeared well on the way to doubling its quota. Feiiding had a house-to-house collection this week, which realised £7OO. Attention was now focussed on the Auckland Metropolitan appeal. '/He was confident that when this concluded £1,000,000 would be far exceeded.
