WAR IN CHINA Chinese Report Successes [Aus. & N.Z. Severe fighting is continuing m tne area There the Japanese a tortnight ago launched an offensive, aiming to oust the Chinese, who have long been entrenched in these mountains. ■ Semi-official Chinese despatches declare that Japanese casualties have been heavy, and that truck loads of wounded have been sent eastward daily. The Chinese Government also has announced that Chinese forces have recaptured Chuki, in Chekiang Province, inflicting four thousand casualties on the Japanese, and that the Japanese forces are retreating northward from Chuki. JAPANESE CLAIM SUCCESS. TOKIO, May 21. ‘ The Dome! News Agency states that the Japanese forces have evacuated the Waichow sector, in Kwantung Province. The Chinese 160th. Division and Ninth Independent Brigade were crushed. BRITISH MEDICAL AID FOR CHINESE. (Received May 22, 11.5 p.m.) RUGBY, May 21. Reference was made to British relief work in China by Mr Butler (Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs), when answering a question in the House of Commons. He said that the matter of increasing medical assistance to China was under consideration.
