BRUNNER NOTES

The Brunner Brass Band held its annual social on Saturday with a banquet at the new Taylorville Hall. The President, Mr. T. Morgan, welcomed members of the Greymouth Municipal Band and other visitors; also the Band’s lady supporters. A presentation of a fountain pen was made to Mr. R. R. Smith, in appre ciation of his services as auditor and as an enthusiastic sponsor of tne Band. Presentations were also made to Masters Royce Kerr and J'. Harper, the youngest members of the Band, as being the most improved players during the year. Fitting references were made by several speakers to the excellent progress of the Brunner Band, and those responsible were complimented on their good work, particularly the Chairman, the Secretary, and Conductor. To promote interest amongst bandsmen, the Chairman made an appeal to other Coast bands to definitely bring about the proposed inter-band visits decided upon some time ago. The following toasts were honoured: “The King,” “The Boys Overseas/’ “The Ladies,” "Old Time Bandsmen,” "The Brunner Band,” "The Pianiste,” “Visiting Bandsmen,” “The Press,” and “The Chairman.” Items were given by Miss Fentiman, Mrs. Browning, Mrs. ’McCallum, Messrs McCallum, Jnr., J. Myers, A. Cootes, W. Ford, McCallum, ’ Senr., and Baird. Miss M. Watson presided at the piano, and the Chairman paid a tribute to her on her work for tXie Band. A children’s “Hard-Up” hall was held in Wallsend Hall on Friday evening, the proceeds being in aid of the Army Queen. The halh was well filled with children, and a happy time was spent. Many of-the costumes worn gave amusement to everyone. Miss Watson supplied the music and Mr. R.’ Moth was M.C. A “Lucky Spot” dance was won by D. Walker and Shirley Pengalley. Awards were: Best hard-up costume, Valda Browning and Arthur MOoney; Best Costume, Frances Gibson; Doll Competition, Vera Hoggarth; Knife Competition, Alan McPhie; Crystal Salad Bowl, S. B. Quintrell; Owl, Mrs. E. Na'sh. Mrs. J. Pender, of Taylorville, has left on a visit to her daughter at Oxford. Mr. A. J. Gutberlet Jnr., of Dobson, left yesterday on transfer front Greymouth P.O. to Palmerston North. Mr. and Mrs. G. Neilson, of Hokitika, are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Gutberlet, of Dobson.
