The Kartigi is due from Auckland about the 24th inst. to load coal for Auckland and Portland. ’ The Totara is due from Wellington on Monday next to load coal for return to Wellington. Personal: ■ Mr H. McGrath, of Nelson, is visiting Westport. Mrs C. Lovell, of Nelson, is visiting Westport. Mr F. Stanley, of Auckland, is visiting Westport. ,Mr and Mrs C. Webley, who have been visiting Westport, left on Saturday on return. Mr and Mrs McWhirter, of Christchurch, are visiting Westport. Miss Z. Bucknell, of Wellington, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs A. T. Bucknell. Mr John Flavelle, a' member of the Home Guard, was admitted to the Buller Hospital yesterday suffering from a strained muscle. Hjs condition was later reported as satisfactory. The funeral of the late Mrs Alex McDowell took place on Sunday afternoon, many old friends attending. Services were held at the church and cemetery by the Rev. H. L. Wilkinson. Messrs T. Vickery, L. Paul. J. Nottle and B. Walker acted as pall-bearers. The death took place in the Buller Hospital on Saturday morning of Mr James Christian Harder, manager of the Buller “Times,” and a wellknown and highly respected resident. For most of his life he was employed in the printing trade. "'He was a member of a well-known pioneering family in the Buller district. Deceased is survived by his widow, four sons, Albert, Leonard, Robert (Westport) and Donald (Palmerston North), and two daughters, Mesdames T. Rogers and G. Mason (Westport); four brothers, Messrs Ben. Frank, J'ohn and Les (Westport), and a sister, Mrs G. M. Powell, to all of whom sympathy is extended in their sad loss.

Power Failure: Due to a defect, traced locally by | Mr T. Weekes, borough electrical engineer, electric current was interrupted on several occasions on Saturday. Once the fault was discovered, the trouble was quickly rectified. Athletic Sports: The Air Force Queen meeting on Victoria Square on Saturday afternoon proved very successful, the weather being perfect and a large crowd was present. The highlight of the ' afternoon was the mile flat. There were only four competitors, N. Sutton (Greymouth), J. Barron (Nelson), both off scratch, and two Westport men, T. Phipps (100 yards) and F Wood (150 yards). The scratch men caught the long-marker s in the last round, and drawing away fought out a splendid finish, Sutton winning in the last few strides. His time, 4min 33sec, was 4sec better than his Mahar Cup effort. Prior to the sports, all the basketball teams lined up behind the Air Force Queen’s float, which was preceded by the band, and marched in the form of a procession to Victoria Square. River Swimming Race: The Westport Amateur Swimming Club held a down-river swim in aid of the Navy Queen yesterday afternoon, from the rowing sheds to the floating basin. There were seven starters, and the race wa’s .won/ by J. Thompson from C. Robertson, with J. Stowell third. Results: Scratch event —J. Thompson (21min 20sec) 1; C. Robertson (22min 4sec) 2; J. Stowell (22 min 34sec) 3. Sealed handicap—J’. Stowell, 4min (22min 34sec) 1; W. Erskine’, smin (23min 52sec) 2; J. Thompson, smin (21min 20sec) and T. Hansby, smin (24min 20sec) equal 3.

Bowling: , . A Buller Centre team, comprising seven rinks, from Westport, Millerton, Denniston, and R.S.A., visited Nelson over the week-end, and won the Noble Adams Shield from Nelson, which has held the trophy since 1936. Buller team won by 170 shots to 162. The new trophy-holders arrived home on Sunday, well pleased with their success, and were heartily congratulated by fellow bowlers of the Buller district. Tennis: In a Pullar Cup challenge game, played on St. John's courts, Victoria Square, on Sunday afternoon, _ St. John's ’ (holders) defeated Denniston (challengers) by 9 matches 80 games to two matches 52 games. The weather was overcast, and rain interrupted the games twice before play was abandoned. Results were as follows (St. John's names first): J. Rose lost to M. Thomas 3/9, C. Boyes beat K.
