Racine Notes Gladynev: Gladynev, purchased at Trentham recently by the Bulls trainer, A. K. Neale, is to race in the interests of Mrs. S. Levin, of Wellington, who previously raced Pahu and Lustral. Gladynev is being kept in light work, and will probably be prepared for one of the metropolitan handicaps later in the season. When trained by J. T. Jamieson in Sydney earlier in the season, Gladynev was considered a “certainty” for the Caulfield Cup when he was handicapped on the minimum, but in a sensational race Beaulivre beat him by a narrow margin. Newmarket Sales:

The King’s three-year-old filly, Great Truth, was sold for 1,300 gns. on the second day of the bloodstock sales at Newmarket. The purchaser was the Newmarket trainer, J. L. Jarvis. Great Truth is by Bahram from Frankly, who is of the same family as the Derby winner, Blenheim. The sales lasted three days, and the aggregate was 74,416 gns. It was generally left that the result indicated confidence in the future of the breeding industry. Last year the sales extended over five days, and realised 111,599 gns. - -'i.’i Sold:

Mr. C. H. Slater, of Hastings, has disposed of the brother to Lady Furst (Siegfried—Vigilance), to Mr. J’ohn Wren, Melbourne, through the agency of Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd. The colt was passed in at the yearling sales at 450 guineas, and has now been sold at a substantial figure. Mr. W’ren was the buyer of the Bulandshar —Tea Tattle colt which topped last year’s sale at 2,000 guineas, and he has raced another New Zealander, Wilson, with some success in Australia. He has a yearling brother to Wilson, being reared at the Flaxmere Stud, ’Hastings. Too Much Scotch:

Last June a Scotch punter wanted 50 to 1 about Beau Vite for the Melbourne Cup from a bookmaker friend He was offered 20 to 1, but no business was done. Soon afterwards the bookmaker became ill, and only a blood transfusion would save him. The Scot offered his blood, and after a couple of pints had been injected the bookmaker made a rapid recovery. “Now that my blood has saved you I suppose you’ll lay me that 50 to 1 Beau Vite,” said the Scot, when visiting the bookmaker in hospital. “They must have given me too much of your blood,” replieci the bookmaker “because now I feel disposed to offer you only 10 to 1.” English Blood:

The English-bred colt, Ballater, by April the Fifth (winner of the Derby), has been secured by the Riccarton trainer, C. C. McCarthy. The colt was purchased at the foot of his dam at Newmarket by Mr. C. E.

Robertson on behalf of Mr. J. C. Fletcher, Te Kauwhata. The dam, Caerlaverock, was by Ellangowan (winner of the Two Thousand Guineas) from a mare by The Tetrarch and descending from a three-quarter sister to Chaucer. Ballater, who will not be two years old until May, is a well-developed brown colt, and was passed in when offered at the National Sales. Waikato Trip. The Opaki trainer B. Burgess evidently intends to go north for the Waikato meeting on February 15 and 17, for both Happy Ending and Augment figure among the entries for the meeting. Augment, who is now out of the hack ranks has been nominated for middle-distance events, and in his present form he should be a bright prospect to pick up a stake on the trip. Happy Ending is also a promising sort of whom th’e best has yet to be seen, and he also should prove equal to paying expenses.
