LONDON LOSSES
Lord Mayor’s Lament AT PEOPLE’S APATHY (Received February 11, 10.40 p.m.) LONDON, February 11. Lord Mayor Wilkinson, of-. London, in a speech, said he wondered how much of the city will be left when his year of office ends. He remarked: “Despite the grievous losses, I still find an appalling apathy regarding the saving of as much as possible from what remains. There are buildings still left untenanted. They are locked up at nights. Everything that we neglect weakens us and delays victory.”
The “Daily Express asks: “Where are the fire;watchers.” An “Express" reporter toured the city, knocking at doors, and ringing bells. He often obtained no answer. There are premises near Saint Paul’s padlocked, while there are still piles of wrecked wood on the sites.
One businessman, when interviewed said: “Many people still have not the slightest consciousness of the danger of fire-bombs. They show criminal neglect ”
