A special meeting of the Runanga Branch of the New Zealand Labour Party is called on Monday evening at 7 o’clock at the Miners’' Hall to make arrangements for the Branch’s picnic.

The Kumar a Picnic Committee extend a hearty invitation to all exKumaraites and their friends, to attend the Picnic on the Kumara Racecourse next Saturday, February 15.— Advt.

When she fell from a horse, Miss Betty McCutcheon, aged 18 years, of Inchbonnie, suffered injuries necessitating her admittance to the Grey River Hospital. After an X-rav examination. however. it was found that no bones were fractured. H?r condition last evening wa.<? reported as satisfactory.

Many residents of 'Greymoutr. were awakened from sleep at about 6.15 o’clock yesterday morning, by a sharp earthquake, which was of very brief duration. The daily running of the express between Greymouth and Christchurch will cease after to-day, and the trains will revert to the old timetable of Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. To accommodate holiday traffic the express has been running daily, but with a decrease in the number of passengers, it is no longer necessary.

There are two heads, and two spinal columns, but only twb ’wings and two legs. The organs mentioned are also definitely developed, hue a lack of development is evident in the vertebrae as between th e two spines, and in fact in the organs generally of the inner sides of the twins where they ar,, united. A Bell and Howell portable “talkie” plant has been purchased by the Blaketown Home and School Association and School Committee, and before a representative gathering at the School Gymnasium on Thursday evening, the machine was successfully demonstrated. A microphone is attachable to the machine, so tnat silent films can be described from the screen, to appear as though they were actual newsreels, or the sound track can be switched off and the teacher or a child can take up the commentary.' It will also take a

gramophone .pick-up, so that music can be faded in or out as required. The machine will cost £125, £45 of which is in hand, £7O being required. It was suggested that screenings be made at the Greymouth Town Hall twice weekly for the benefit of other school pupils and also that programmes suitable for adults be shown at the Blaketown Hall fortnightly.

Four new members were welcomed by the President Mr. S. B. Quintrell, at the monthly meeting of the Brunner Branch of the Red Cross Society held recently, when there was a good attendance. Two members ot the Red Cross classes have completed their sixty hours’ training at tne Greymouth Hospital. The First Ai<! certificates are to be presented at a social function. Points of interest m the monthly bulletin were discussed and it was decided to make a grant towards the cost of installing a frigidaire in the Red Cross Home in Wellington. Votes of thanks and appreciation were accorded to all who had acted as instructors and examiners for the First Aid and Home Nursing classes.

In the absence of the Presivem, Mrs. Black, the chair was taken by Mrs. Aiderton, at the monthly meeting of the Greymouth Women’s Institute, held in Wesley Hall recency. One new member was proposed. It was agreed to exhibit members’ worn at the A. and P. Show, members to take articles to the Park in the mornnig of Show Day. The annual picnic is to be held at Omoto. A large parcel of knitting was collected tor the Patriotic Committee and more wool given out. Mrs. Dixon gave a demonstration on pine needle trays. Nominations for the year’s Committee and president were made, also for the W.C. Federation executive. Competition winners were: Flowers, Mrs. Pound 1; Mrs. Parfitt 2; Mrs. Aiderten 3. Jam: Mrs. Pound and Mrs. Green 1, equal. Afternoon tea was served by the Committee.
