Bowden, of Westport, are visiting Blenheim. Mrs. Harman and children,_ of Opa rara, are spending holidays in WestAdmiral and Mrs. Sydenham, have returned from a holiday spent at Hanmer. , , Miss S Atkinson, who spent ne«. vacation with her people in Westport, has returned to Christchurch. Mr. Peter Mumm, has been appointed to a clerical position in the N.Z. Railways and left yesterday for Greymouth to take up duties. . Mr. J'ack Neighbours, of Waimangaroa' Junction, has received an appointment with the Trentham Military Band. Mr. and Mrs. Stafford, and Mr. H. Stewart returned to Nelson after spending holidays with relatives at Karamea. Mrs. F. Knight, returned yesterday from a' visit to relatives at Eoatman's Creek. Mr. W. H. Martin, left yesterday for Christchurch to attend the meeting of the Herd Improvement Council. A. and P. Association:
Mr. W. H. Hateley occupied the chair at last night’s meeting of the A. and P. Association, and the following memb'ers were also present: Messrs R. E. White, A. E. Ferguson, J. McEnaney, H. Palmer, C. J. Lemon W. J'. Young, M. Durkin, R. Lowe, F. ’ Kelly, J. A. Bailey, N. Archer, D. Broad, A. Vincent, J. N. Stowell, M. O’Dea'' L. Menzies and F. Skilton. Mr. Durkin submitted a report on behalf of the horse committee. He said that the committee had recommended that Mr. T. Murphy be asked to judge the prop events. Donations of £lO 10s from Mr. H. N. B. Archer and £5 5s from Mr. J. P. Burley, towards cups for the horse section, were accepted with thanks. Mr. R. Lowe was 1 appointed judge’s steward for the horse events. It was decided to have a grand parade of the winning stock after the steer riding event. The motion was passed with two dissentients. A further motion that the parade be held at 3 p.m. was passed. An offer to instal a public address system was accepted with thanks. A letter from the station-master agreeing to delay the outward train till 6.30 p.m. on People’s Day, was received. A motion of sympathy was passed, in silence at the death of Mr. R. Wanden, Secretary of the Marlborough A. and P. Association. A motion of thanks to Mr. E. Skilton for a donation of £2 2s was passed. A motion wishing Mr. C. W. Garvey, a member of the Association, who is at present in the Christchurch hospital, a speedy recovery, was paksed. Mr. N. Archer was thanked for providing steers for the steer riding competition. Mr. R. Powell’s offer of a bull for a weight guessing competition was accepted. Arrangements for transporting an exhibition deer to the show were left to Mr. Palmer. It was decided to ac accept late entries for the children’s competitions up till 5 p.m. tomorrow. A motion that members of the National Reserve and Home Guard be asked to take part in Saturday's parade was passed. Tennis:
St. John’s narrowly defeated Denniston at Victoria Square on Saturday by 10 matches and 122 games to 9 matches and 116 games. A feature of the play was the fine showing by Miss E. Pullar, who raised her position on the Buller ladder, as also did M. Thomas and K. Dellaway, who beat players ranked higher on the ladder. Results were as follows, St. John’s players being mentioned first: Men’s Singles: J. Rose lost to M. Thoma's, 3/9; E. W- Tonks lost to K. Dellaway. 8/9; W. Lambert beat H. Baird 9/7; C. Leighton lost to O. Filer,' 3/9; K. Kendon beat R. den 9/3; K. Watson lost to W. Clark 2/9. Ladies’ Singles: Mrs. Ritchie beat Mrs. Baird 7/4; Miss V. Phipps lost to Miss V. Thomas 6/7; Miss J. Powell beat Miss N. Thomas 7/3; Miss Cunningham lost to Miss E. Pullar, 2/7. Men’s Doubles: J. Rose and E. Tonks lost to Thomas and Baird 6/9; W. Lambert and C. Leighton beat Dellaway and Filer 9/5; Kendon and Watson beat Madden and Clark 9/1. Ladies’ Doubles: Mrs. Ritchie and Miss Phipps -beat Mrs. Baird and Miss Pullar 7/2; Misses Powell and Cunningham beat Misses Thomas and Thomas 7/5. Combined Doubles: J. Rose and Mrs. Ritchie beat Thomas and Miss V. Thomas 9/5; E. Tonks and Miss Phipps lost to Baird and Mrs. Baird 6/9; W. Lambert and Miss Powell beat ' Dellaway and Miss Pullar 9/4. Fixtures for next week end are as follows, home teams mentioned first: —Granity v. St. John’s; Denniston v. Westport; Waimangaroa a bye. The Denniston v. Westport match is also a challenge match for the Pullar Cup. Technical School:
The Technical High School opened yesterday morning with an actual attendance of 107; a few more are still to come, but the roll number shows a considerable falling off on last year’s total on account of the big demand for boys and girls to replace those on military service. After singing the National Anthem, the Principal, Mr. J. Metson, briefly outlined events of the past few weeks and told the pupils that the one thing that mattered this year, and that which must take precedence over everything else, was the prosecution and winning of the war. The rest of this week is to be given up to a “barracks” at the School for the boys, and first aid instruction and training for the girls. Soldiers’ Comforts: The Buller Soldiers’ Comforts Committee, which has an ever increasing drain on its funds, intends holding a Paddy’s Market in Westport on Friday and Saturday 14th. and 15th. February, and requests support from town and country. All members of the committee are asked to be responsible for obtaining at least four donations and as many more as possible.

The funeral of the late Monica Joyce, which took,.place yesterday morning, was largely attended, and many beautifu. floral tributes were placed on th c grave. The Rev. Association’s smoke concert is to be held at the Elite Tearooms to-morrow night. ■ For the boy’s riding event under 14 years at the Show, Mr W. D. Gadd ha s donated a trophy valued at 10s 6d.‘ At the Children's Court yesterday, before Mr G. G. Chisholm, a youth aged 17 years was admonished and discharged. He was charged with stealing Is 3ct worth of stamps by inserting copper discs ' instead ot pennie s into the stamp vending machine, obtaining 15 penny stamps.
