HOME GUARD
Council Discussion The subject of equipment for the Home Guard was'brought before the Greymouth Borough Council last evening by Cr. H. Herring, who said that as the controlling body, . the Council could suppor tthe Committee in pointing out to the Minister of National Service that it was their opinion that in the interests of the country the Home Guard should be supplied with equipment before uniforms. The Minister had stated that Territorial uniforms would be handed to the Home Guards, but he had overlooked 'the fact that there were far more Home Guards than Territorials. It would be much oetibr to provide equipment. Uniforms were not necessary in the meantime. He moved that the Council write the Director of National Service, suggesting that uniforms should not be provided first, but that the Home Guards should have equipment. Cr. J. Anderson seconded the motion, saying that the Home Guard Committee had already made the same recommendation. Cr. J. B. Kent said the idea was quite good but equipment was required for the Territorial Forces, and it was economic to pass the Territorial uniforms on to the Home Guard mem-
bers of which had asked for uniforms. Cr. C. Neville: There was no request from Greymouth. Cr. Kent: I have heard it from individual members. It is another matter to supply equipment, because it is much more required, even overseas. The motion was carried.
