Johannesburg Riots OVER 300 INJURED. JOHANNESBURG, February 3. Armoured cars are still patrolling the streets of Johannesburg. Eightyfive are still in hospital as the result of the riots, and 231 others were Injured. CAPETOWN, February 3. General Smuts, as General Officer commanding the Defence Forces, issued a special order emphasising the necessity for all ranks to observe orderly conduct, “even in the face of frequent provocation.” He most gravely disapproves of the riotous conduct of certain members of the forces in Johannesburg on January 21 and February 2, discrediting the uniform and embarrassing the General Officer Commanding, who will take severe disciplinary action to maintain respect for authority and obedience to civil law.
Speaking in the Senate, General Smuts said that South African lighting forces would go to the shores of the Mediterranean if necessary, but anything else would be with the consent of Parliament. General Smuts tokl the House of
Assembly that fuff inquiry would be held into the Johannesburg riots Compensation would be paid for damage.
