GIBRALTAR

NOW AN ISLAND. [Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.l LONDON, February 4. Gibraltar has been transformed into an island. French radio stations announced recently that the British garrison has constructed a canal across the isthmus which joins the Rock of Spain. The isthmus, which is about twothirds of a mile wide at its narrowest point consists of a’ low sandy plain. The Rock is only two and a-half miles long, and the significance of the cutting of a canal would be military rather than naval.
