BLACKBALL NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] The many friends of Mrs. L. Cruse, South Belt Street, will be sorry to learn that she is seriously ill' in the Christchurch Hospital. We trust to hear of her recovery. Mr. Jim Hartley, of Lower Hutt, and formerly of Blackball, is a visitor to the old town at present, and is the guest of Mrs. Campbell, Dominion Hotel. It is 25 years since Mr. Hartley left Blackball, and he is being kept busy renewing old acquaintances.

Mr. and Mrs. Mason and family, Stafford Street, have gone to the Nelson district on holiday. Mr. and Mrs. C. Page and family, of Lower Hutt, are visiting Blackball at present and are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J'. L. Davies, Sandy Street. Mr. W. Pearson, Marlborough Street, Greymouth, t who has been spending a holiday in Blackball as the guest of Mrs. Beale, Stafford Street, has left on his return. Mr. and Mrs. Reid and family, of Christchurch, who have been visiting Mrs. Reid's parents in Blackball, Mr. and Mrs. J. Dillon, Clifford Street, have returned to their home.

A marriage of interest to Blackball people took place in Huntly two weeks ago, the contracting parties being Mr. George Dillon (“Digger”) eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Dillon, Clifford Street, and Grace, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lowen, of Huntly. The honeymoon was spent in the north. Mr. Dillon went into camp last Tuesday week, he having enlisted in the Engineer Corps some time ago. We wish the young couple every good luck. The following letter has been received by Mrs. F. Mason chairwoman of the local. Women’s Institute: “At Sea, January 5, 1941. 'Dear Mrs; Mason,—These few lines to let you know how much myself and the members of our mess appreciated your Christmas parcel. Everything was in good order and condition, and if you could have been here to hear the remarks passed about these parcels, I am sure that you and all the other women who have spent their time on these Christmas gifts would be more than amply rewarded. — Yours Faithfully, Eng. Sub-Lieut. Colin W. White, Mess Secretary, Engineers’ Mess.”

Messrs H. Bowkett, Jr., and A. Coyle, Jnr., both of Wellington, and formerly of Blackball,, who have been spending a holiday" with their respective parents in Blackball have left on return. Mr. and Mrs. W. Heyward, of Roa, have gone to Christchurch on holiday. Messrs C. Macßoberts and R. C. Mountford are spending a holiday in Hawke’s Bay. We have been experiencing a very cold snap since Sunday last, continuing until to-day. Wednesday, when the weather again became .fine, and we hope it will long continue. So far, we have experienced a beautiful summer. Feed ha's been plentiful, and stock is looking well, and now the lower ranges are quite red with rata blossom, which means good crops of honey if the weather continues to hold good.
