The Korowai is in port loading coal for Auckland and is to sail tomorrow. The Wingatui is clue from Wellington to-night with general cargo, and loads coal for return to Wellington. The Holmlea has been delayed and is now due from Tarakohe on Saturday to load coal for return to Tarakohe. The Kaitoa is now expected from Nelson on Saturday to load coal for Picton. Personal: Mr. Eert Doyle of Frankton Junction, is visiting relatives in Westport. A’ very pleasant afternoon was spent at the home of Mrs. C. Taylor, Russell Street, on Tuesday afternoon, when the members of the Methodist Ladies’ Guild assembled to congratulate Mrs. Taylor on the occasion of her eighty-eighth birthday. The VicePresident. Mrs. Parfitt, in a happy little speech, extended the best wishes of the Guild and hoped they would spend many more such happy occasions together. Items were given by Miss B. Taylor and Mrs. Parfitt Mrs. Went presented Mrs. Taylor with a beautiful bouquet. Mrs. Taylor expressed her thanks to all present. After the serving of a dainty afternoon tea and the cutting of the birthday cake, the gathering concluded with the singing of “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow” and “Auld Lang Syne."
The death occurred on Wednesday morning at the residence, Adderley ' Street, of Henry Joseph Golder, aged 58 years. The late Mr. Golder wa's a native of England, but had lived in New Zealand for the past 46 years. He had worked in the Buller Gorge for ' a number of years and latterly had been employed about the waterfront as night-watchman. To the relatives his wife, son, and three daughters, the sympathy of the community will be extended. The death occurred at Richmond, Nelson, on Wednesday morning, of Mr. William Henry Bowater, formerly a well known and highly respected Westport resident. Mr. Bowater, who was 77 years of age, was born in Kitterminster, England, and early came to New Zealand with his parents, residing for a time at Charleston. Later in partnership with the late Mr. G. F. Bryan, he conducted a sawmilling business at Reefton, this being followed by the founding of a similar business in Westport, which was successfully carried on for many years. Some years ago he moved to Nelson, where he has since resided. The late Mr. Bowater took a keen interest in local affairs and was President of the Chamber of Commerce and, President of the Buller A. and P. Association and had the welfare of the district always at heart. He was also a prominent member of the Masonic Lodge. The sympathy of many friends in this district is extended to his wife and family of live daughters, Mesdames Snodgrass (Nelson), Petley (Westport), Dickel (Murchison), Burmeister (Melbourne), and Ductor (Christchurch), and four sons, Messrs Percy (Cape Line), Ray (Nelson), Charles (Christchurch), and William (Auckland). The funeral will leave the Masonic Hall, Westport, on Friday at 2.30 p.m.
Fire Brigade: The members of the Westport Fire Brigade decided at their meeting last evening to issue, an invitation to hold the 1942 Fire Brigade Demonstrations and Conference to be held at Westport. In the past, Westport has always had its disadvantages, through no rail connection with the rest of the South Island, but in view of the near completion of the Buller Gorge all the South Island delegates and competitors will be able to reach Westport by rail. The members also decided ’to nominate Superintendent Daily for the position of Vice-Presi-dent of the accident branch of the United Fire Brigades’ Association. This year the Conference will take place at Blenheim, beginning on March 10.
Watersiders’ Picnic: The Watersiders Workers’ Union's annual picnic held on the Westport Jockey Club’s grounds on Wednesday, attracted a record attendance and the event was the most successful ever held. The weather was perfect. The Watersiders’ picnic is the leading event of its kind in the Buller district and the great amount of organisation is handled by a particularly energetic committee, led by Messrs W. H. Woodcock (Chairman) and R. Mann (Secretary). A big programme of events was run off to suit all present and the presence of the Korowai and Totara, who also observed a holiday, added interest to the picnic as some of the seamen took part in the events. The starting of Mr. Roy McHerron was a feature of the picnic, while the management of the catering by Mr. T. Elcock. with leading assistants in Messrs J l . Chapelow and L. Walsh, was excellent in every way. Another of the catering branches was in the capable ha.nds of Messrs W. O’Keefe and O. Prince. Others who helped to make the gathering such a 1 great success were Messrs L. Tredennick, M. Seaton, W. Elliot, W. Caldwell and E. Prout (musical director). The children were well treated with sweets, ice-creams and drinks, and the ladies appreciated the dainty afternoon tea.
