WATERSIDERS SACKED

FOR DURATION OF WAR Auckland Echo OF FREEZING STORE DISMISSALS. [Per Press Association) AUCKLAND. January 15. Five waterside workers have been dismissed from the Auckland waterfront for the duration of the war. These men walked off their jobs on Monday and Tuesday of last week when asked to handle butter and cheese brought out of the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company’s cool stores by new labour. The five men acted in sympathy with the 140 cool store workers, who were dismissed for refusing to work on Sundays until their claims for higher pay and better conditions were met. The five waterside workers suffered the usual penalty, which is that.of being stood down for two days, or, as in this case, for the duration of the job on which they were engaged. When dismissed, they returned to work on Wednesday of last week, but they are now suffering a greater ‘penalty. The action was taken by the Waterfront Control Commission, but the Auckland Waterfront Controller,. Captain C. V. Stanich, has declined to comment, or to make any announcement about the men’s dismissal.

The Secretary of the Auckland Waterside Workers’ Union, Mr A. Girvan, said that his Union had no statement to make about the men’s penalty in the meantime, but a report on the matter, which the Union was handling nationally, would be published later.
