TRAWLER STOPPED. CHRISTCHURCH, January 14. Two shots were fired from Battery Point on Sunday morning at the steam trawler “Cowan.” When the “Cowan” entered the heads the signal that the port . was closed was showing at the military signal station. The examination vessel was in the inner harbour; for the purpose of exchanging men for leave. The “Cowan” waited for more than an hour and then proceeded up the harbour. As the vessel approached Battery Point a plugged shot was tired across the bows, and, as the trawler did not stop, a second shot was fired. The “Cowan” then returned to the anchorage and awaited the examination vessel, coming up the harbour later with the correct signal showing.

BICYCLE COLLAPSES CHRISTCHURCH, January 14. When the forks of a bicycle on which they were riding together broke at the corner of Cashel and Colombo Streets last evening, Mr and Mrs R. M. Westwood, of 31 Worcester Street, both suffered head injuries. They were admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital, where their condition was reported late last night to be satisfactory. WOMAN DIES SUDDENLY. BLENHEIM, ■ January 13. Mrs Janet Brown, wife of Mr Richard Brown, of Blenheim, dropped dead in a railway carriage leaving Picton wharf on Saturday afternoon. Mrs Brown had just disembarked from the Tamahine after arrival from Wellington.
