WAIOURU CAMP

Cause of Delays WELLINGTON, January 14. The national secretary of the Building Labourers’ Federation, (Mr P. M. Butler), denies the statement made that an important cause of the delay in completing the Waiouru camp on schedule time was that the men had taken inordinately long holidays. It was one to which every man on the job would greatly object, being an unjustifiable aspersion and as incorrect as it was unfair, he said. Mr Butler added that the men did not get any paid holidays, not even Christmas Day, and there had been very patent causes for the delay other than the possible fault of the men who had done their work under most unpleasant conditions during most of the months they had been there. Most of the employers arbitrarily closed down at Christmas for periods ranging from 10 to 16 days, he said, meaning, in effect, the dismissal of the workers for that time.
