REEFTON NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent! REEFTON, January 8. Hot weather is being experienced here as well as in other parts of the Dominion at the present. At Dunedin 102 dgerees was recorded in the sun. That figure was, however, easily beaten in Reefton, as yesterday 124 degrees was registered in the sun. The hills to the south of Reefton were ablaze on Tuesday afternoon, when for a couple of hours dark smoke rolled ever the town, and proved an annoyance. In addition, fires started in the hills east of the town, but from these the wind was blowing the smoke to the north, and no illeffects were felt in Reefton. The destruction of the native bush is, however; a’ serious matter. It is hoped that if the fires were started by children, they be warned of the seriousness of their wanton acts, and of the damage that might acrue from their thoughtlessness. Soot from the fire across the river was falling into the swimming baths yesterday. The children there appealed to the caretaker, “Crossie, stop this black stuff coming into the water!” This provoked the amusement of their elders. The engagement is announced of Margaret Elizabeth (Mollie), only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. Eyeington, of Inangahua Junction, and Garth ’ Allan David, youngest son of Mr Thomas Southern, of Inangahui.. The Rev. R. and Mrs. Seaton and family left to-day for Christchurch via Lewis Pass, where his annual leave will be spent. Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Auld returned last evening from Wellington, where he spent the Christmas and New Year holidays with his son. Mr. C. C. McCarthy, the wellknown trainer, of Riccatton, arrived in Reefton last evening, with the * racehorse Cymric.
