Soaking Inland Rains HOUSES PARTLY SUBMERGED (Received January 8, 12.25 a.m.) SYDNEY, January 7. There have been soaking rains in country areas in New South Wales. They have caused local floodings. Two persons were drowned to-day at Yeovil, in the Dubbo district. An avalanche of water descended in a local creek and it swept away the home of an elderly couple. Mrs. Cooper, aged 70, and her son, aged 35, were drowned, but Mrs Cooper’s husband, aged 80, was rescued from a treetop, where he had been marooned for several hours.
Other weatherboard houses in the same locality were partly submerged. The occupants saved themselves by fleeing to higher ground. Bridges, culverts and the railway line in the Yeovil district were demolished. Floodings have also occurred between Orange and Wellington.
