HINTS FOR HOUSEWIVES

Before cooking lamb’s fry, remove the thin skin. The fry will be much more tender and more easily digested.

A paste of oatmeal and kerosene rubbed well into the hands and fingers will remove almost any stain. Rinse first in cold water and then in hot to remove the smell of kerosene.

Before peeling apples, allow them to stand for five minutes in- boiling water. The skin will come off more thinly and quickly.

The wrong side of materials can be easily discovered if the material is held toward the light. The wrong side shows a roughness due to small thread ends.

When burning vegetable refuse or parings in the stove or fireplace, put a handful of kitchen salt with the rubbish. This will prevent any unpleasant odor.

Tiled hearths should never be washed with water, as this causes the enamel to crack. Rub the tiles with a duster dipped in turpentine, and polish with a soft cloth. Instead of buying ribbon for handknitted vests, knit the straps yourself. They will be a perfect match, never slip and will not need renewing or ironing.

Red hands may be whitened by adding a pinch of chloride of lime to warm, soft water for washing. Remove all rings and bracelets as the chloride is harmful to metals.

An enamel plate placed upside down in the bottom of the saucepan in which a pudding is being boiled will prevent the pudding burning should the water evaporate.

Grease cake-tins with lard and the cakes will not stick.

If leather chairs become sticky, wash them with warm soapy water to remove the old polish. Dry thoroughly. Mix together 1 part of olive oil and two parts vinegar. Apply to leather with a soft duster. Do not use wax polish after this treatment.

If starched clothes are left on the line till the dew falls on them and then rolled up tightly, they will not need damning before ironing next day.

Linoleum that is losing its freshness may be restored by melting a little ordinary glue in a pint of hot water. After the lino has been thoroughly cleaned and dried, go over it with a flannel dipped in the glue water. It will dry with a nice hard gloss which is non-slip.

To retain the crispness of organdie, dip it into methylated spirit after washing, then dry as usual and iron whiije damp. Organdie treated in this manner will retain colour and freshness for months.

Sew, with invisible stitches, a square of similarrtoned crepe-de-cbine to the shape of the heel on the inside of your silk stockings, to prevent the heels from rubbing into holes. It is wonderful how long a pair will remain without holes, as all the wear is on the silk lining.—“Glenside.”

Save all paper that has been used for wrapping butter, and use it for lining cake tins and covering puddings that are to be steamed. Tnis will save both paper and butter.
