CARGO VESSEL

DISABLES U-BOAT. ATLANTIC GUN DUEL. [Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn ] (Received January 7, 8.5 p.m.) LONDON, January 6 The cargo vessel Sarastone, although sh e had been crippled with boiler trouble, fought a brilliant action against a U-boat, which was left with smoke and yellow fumes pouring from her. The Sarastone left a convoy on the Atlantic because of boiler trouble, her reduced speed being two knots, and she made for Lisbon. A submarine was sighted two days later. It opened fire from a range of two miles. The Sarosi one’s twelve-pounder gun replied, and its second shell put the submarine’s heavy gun out of action. A light gun duel followed till a shell from the Sarastone hit the submarine aft, causing smoke and fumes. The action was continued till’ it was obvious that the submarine had stopped. Thereupon the Sarastone steamed ofi undamaged.
