In the “Argus” the workers of the West Coast have an invaluable asset. For twenty-one years it has fought their fight in season and out of season, and the concessions won by its efforts have been varied and many. Starting under rather unfavourable circumstances it has ploughed a straight furrow towards Labour’s objective. It has helped considerably to place a Labour .Government on the Treasury Benches, and the Social legislation enacted during the last five years is the astonishment andenvy of other less favoured democracies. While it has done so much in the past;, its task in the future to hold what we have already, and improve' still further the legislation we are 'so proud of is no mean job. To the better future of New Zealand and the West Coast in particular, I dedicate the “Argus” for the next twenty-one years. J. SMEATON, Chairman of Directors.
