[Our Own Correspondent] HOKITIKA, December 18. The death has occurred of Mrs Rose Ann an old and highly respected resident of Arahura Valley over a long period of years. Her husband predeceased her some years ago. Deceased was a native of County Derry, Ireland and 82 years of age: She leaves a family of five daughters, Mrs Agnew and Misses M. and R. McGuigan (of Arahura Valley), Mrs J. Pickering (of Hokitika) and’Mrs C. Webley (of Nelson), and three sons, Joseph (Arahura), John (Geraldine) and Edward (Addington). There are also 17 grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren. The family will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement. This week’s retur nof the Rimu Flat dredge was 155 ozs 13 dwts oi gold from 45/815 cubic yars of material excavated in 131 hours 55 minutes total time digging. 1 A change to southerly weather’ last , evening, when rain .came on, increas- ; ing later, brought a lowering of temperature, but the day was line, while the southerly continued. At the monthly meeting last evening of the Hospital Board there were present Messrs E. W. Heenan (chairman), Duff, Dale, Heinz, Fox, Elcock.
Freitas and Jamieson. Accounts amounting to £2432 13s 5d were passed for payment. It was decided to seek an overdraft authority for £2OOO The Social Security Department advised of its granting subsidy for Scheme 13 workers for 13 weeks from November 11. The Public Works Department wrote re Bruce Bay cot-
tage and it was decided that the secretary complete arrangements. It was reported that the horse at the farm was to be destroyed. A new horse had been purchased at a cost of £2l It was resolved to make the usual Xmas allowance of 10s each to inmates of the Old People’s Home. Mr .Jamieson expressed appreciation of I the work of the gardener, the condition of the garden being very-satis-factory. Medical Superintendent’s report: Remaining October 31, 71; j admitted during November 63; treated during the month 134; remaining November 30, 55. Miss Ramsay (Matron) reported that last month the beds occupied averaged 63. while there were 41 operations, 62 X-rays, and 288 physico theraphy treatments.
Sister B. Gardener commenced as Tutor Sister on November 22. Sister Williams, night sister, has been accepted for military service, pending medical examination. Sisters McClurg and Fowler have resigned Twelve nurses who attended the invalid cookery class last term gained a pass in theory and practice. Nurses Ward and Wallace sat for the State examination this month, and Nurses
Lawson, Merrick and Avery sat to complete in one subject. Mr H. Shingles. farm manager,, reported that last month there was sold to the institution: Milk (814 gallons) £7l 4s 6d; cream (566 pints) £2B 6s; pigs (4) £l7 11s 6d; eggs (148 dozen) £9 17s 4d; vegetables (160 lbs) £1 17s; total £l2B 16s 4d. The engineer (Mr J. G. Turk) reported on repairs carried out.
