The removal of White’s Electric dredge at Barrytown to a new area occasioned a farewell social at the Barrytown Hall for the staff, where a numerous gathering had an enjoyable evening. The manager of the dredge, Mr Werner, for the crew, thanked t>e residents for many kindnesses, which had made their stay very congenial. Mr T. Gillooly, manager of the Barrytown dredge, on behalf of the gathering, extended the best wishes to the White’s Electric dredge staff. Songs were sung by Mesdarnes J. Devereux, Werner Dennehy, Gardyne, Innes and Mr G Henry. Fischer’s Orchestra supplied the music for the dance. Mr Thomas acted as M.C.

In common with a number of business houses in Greymouth, the railway station is at present receiving a much-needed coat of paint. For a long time the station has presented! a most gloomy appearance, and the newly-painted platform side seems more in keeping with the importance of Greymouth’s railway centre. Unfortunately the numerous placards along the platform have been replaced, obscuring in many parts the newly painted surfaces. When the work is completed the entrance to Greymouth will be much improved, because the new additions to the railway buildings on th? corner of Mackay Street and Mawhera Quay have obliterated all traces of the unsightly structures which formerly were the first indications a visitor had of Greymouth when arriving by train or car from the north. The painting of the station indicates that the prospects of its replacement in the near future are now more remote, owing to war conditions
