WAGE INCREASE

WESTPORT BOROUGH EMPLOYEES WESTPORT, December 12. At the 'Borough Council- meeting, Mr J. Conaghan, secretary of the General Labourers’ Union, headed a deputation in connection with the wages clau-.e in the agreement regarding borough employees. The deputation asked that the men be paid 2 s 5d plus 5 per cent, an hour, thus bringing the wages for a 40-hour week up Io £5. Is Bd. Mr Conaghan said that this was tho recognised rate for labourers employed by other local bodies throughout New .Zealand, and that tho West Coast was th (! only plac e where it did not obtain. He assured the- Council that the Government would support the arrangement. A motion that 'the men be paid 2s 5d phis 5 per cent, an hour was passed.
