BYRD EXPEDITION

VESSEL DUE AT DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN, December 3. Advice has been received in Dunedin that one of the United States Antarctic expedition ships is expected to pay a visit to Dunedin about Christmas or the New Year. No details are included in the communications which has come to hand but it is assumed that the visitor will be the North Star, which, under the command of Admiral R. E. Byrd, called at Dunedin on New Year’s Day 12 months ago,- before going south to join the other expedition vessel, the Bear of Oakland.

It is believed that the purpose of the call is to pick up a quantity of supplies which came to hand too late to be loaded when the expedition went south the first time. When Admiral Byrd was in Dunedin last January, he said that the expedition intended to be away for 18 months, with a possibility of a considerable extension of time in the event of finance being made available by the United States Government. Subsequent news mesasges, however, have indicated that this was not likely to be the case, and it now appears probable that the leader of the expedition, who has been back in America, for some time, is going south again to bring away the main body of explorers and equipment.
