[Our Own Correspondent] HOKITIKA, October 22. The Okuru-Jackson Bay reading works are proceeding steadily. Lorries and a power shovel are now being used on the Turnbull-Waioloto road, wher e Green Bros, have a drag line scoop on Waiototo River with a locomotive and trucks to convey road material. Okuru River bridge superstructure has been put up, and steel and cement can be delivered by the m.v. Gael, as the river has now a straight outlet through the recent effect of the flood. The Turner Cup for towns and gardens has been won on this occasion by Mr A. Groufsky (Sewell St.), next in order in the awards being: Mr A. Gillman (Sewell St.) 2; Mr .P. Loyd (Sewell St.) 3; Mr L>. Stewart (Hall St.) 4; Mrs Neilson (Sewell St.) 5; Mr Fredric (Seweli St.) 6; Mrs E. Breeze (Sewell St.) 7. The following roadside lawns and gardens .were judged worthy of special mention: Mr A. W. Yarrall, E. Keown, Miss Archer, N. Jelly, A Leslie, J. Brown, G. Holley, A. Parkhill, Mr Olsen, Mr Mitchell, T. W. Duff, D. Pettigrew, H. McMullan, E. Lawn, E. Green, G. King, A. H. Stapleton, and Mrs O’Donnell. The following obtained maximum points for outside the fence: —Mr J. Stapleton, Mr F. Stapleton, Miss F. Stapleton, Miss E. Knight. The competition for the greatest improvement on the roadside only, since the last judging, was won by Mr Macfarlane (c/o Mrs Michel); Mr W. Cropp (Sale Street) being highly vommended 2, and Mr W. Dwan. highly commended. At the R.S.A. 'monthly meeting there was a discussion regarding some local' ex-servicemen called in the ballot for the Territorial Force, and* it wa s unanimously decided to strongly protest to Headquarters at ex-servicemen being called to camp for territorial training. Accounts amounting to £5 13s 9d were passed for payment. Headquarters advised that Hokitika with a. membership of 159 was 75th on the national membership ladder. The secretary reported membership now exceeded 200. It iwas decided to send letters of thanks to Mr ’J. Menzies for presenting a golden key; to Mr W. E. Brown for the presentation of a portrait, and to Miss Giese for her work as accompanist at th e banquet. At th e Borough Council’s monthly meeting there were present the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. F. Freitas, G. Heinz, C. Callari, T. W. Duff, D. P. Stuart, and A. R. Elcock. An apology was made for Cr. Stopforth. The Treasurer reported receipts at £3904 18s 6d, payments £1899 8s 4d. Credit balance £1453 18s 6d. Accounts amounting to £1483 19s 2d were passed. It was decided to adopt a Finance Committee recommendation that £l4O 10s Id for water supplied to the Westland Dairy Coy. be agreed to, but the Council had no power to extend payment. The abattoirs report showed that last month there were slaughtered 15 cows, 12 heifers, 77 bullocks (one condemned), 187 sheep, 10 pigs, two calves. Fees for month, £54 2s 6d (same period last year, £65 18s). N.Z. Refrigerating Coy. delivered here last month 168 sheep. Cr. Heinz reported on an examination of the reservoir, which vzas found to be cracked in various places and was leaking badly. Mr R. Watson had reported sufficient water would be provided if seven -feet were repaired. It was decided to experimnt with Belonite, which was reported suitable for the work. Miss G. Appleton’s resignation a s typiste was accepted. It was agreed to subsidise by 10s per day up to £5 for horse and dray work of the Beautifying Assn, in assisting residents in forming roadside lawns, the Assn, having applied for two men to be subsidised by the State on the work for eight weeks. It was agreed

to support a protest by the Businessmen’s Assn, against amending the Shop s and Offices Act as proposed. It was agreed to allow the master butchers to appoint an advisory member to the Abattoir Committee. Irvine and Stevenson, whitebait canners, wrote protesting against being charged for extra water used on.y for three months in the year. All Saints’ Church Committee forwarded a rough plan of sub-division of Lot 2, Reserve 477, and Lot 2, Reserve 477 A, Sewell Street, into two or three sections and asking consent. Requests by Mi’s J. Shaw (Hampden St.) and Mr B. Brown (Park St.) for loads of sand and gravel respectively for the frontages of their properties were referred to the Works Committee.
