[Our Own Correspondent] HOKITIKA, October 16. Rimu Flat dredge return this week was lOOozs of gold from 45,248 yards for 126 hours. . The Hospital Board last evening received tenders as follows; Meat, Andrews Bros £136 4s 9d, Johnson and Son £l4l Bs, E. S. Howson £153 9s 3d. The tender of Andrews Bros, was accepted. Bread: S. G. Havill and J. Hurren both 9±d per 41b loaf. They are to receive month about. Fish (on actual quantities used during the last three months): Preston and Sons £46 11s lid, Northcliffes £47 10s lid. The tender of Preston and Sons was accepted. Carting: J. Coyle (only tender) same as previous six months.—Accepted. At the Land Board meeting to-day timber splitting licenses were granted to the following: P. Moore, 20 acres, Cobden; J. Campbell and Son, 60 acres, Waimea; J. Johns, 5 acres, Ahaura; K. Harper, 37 acres, Mawheranui.
After the meeting last evening the Hospital Board members attended a gathering at the Nurses’ Home to farewell Matron Anderson of the Westland Plospital on the occasion of her transfer next Saturday to a similar position at the hospital in her own home town of Balclutha. Numerous local body members and officials attended, also the medical staff and those off nursing duties. Mr E. W. Heenan, chairman of the board presided, and recalled the extension ot the hospital during her eight-year term from 30 to 80 beds, with a children’s ward and nurses’ home. He presented Miss Anderson with a cheque for three months’ salary as a mark of high appreciation and extended the best wishes of the board. The chairman’s remarks were endorsed by Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), W. A. Jamieson, T. W. Duff, G. H. Chapman, D. J. Evans, A. Dale and G. H. Heinz. Mr Duff presented Miss Anderson with a fountain pen and pencil as a present from the board members. Dr. Wilson, Medical Superintendent, Dr. Aitken his co-worker and Dr. Childs, added their tribute to the departing guest, and the Mayoress, Mrs Perry, spoke for the ladies. Following a dainty supper served by the sisters of the institution, Matron Anderson responded, expressing sincere thanks for all said and done, and wishing the hospital every success. Her stay had been a pleasant one and she would go away with many happy memories. Dr. Childs gave a topical song and Mr A. H. Lawn’s radio performers contributed items, while community singing closed the gathering.
At the- ordinary meeting* of the Westland Hospital' Board there were present Messrs E. W. Heenan .(chairman), A. Dale, J. A. Murdoch, A. R. Elcock, F. D. E. Freitas, G. H. Chapman, G. Heinz, W. A. Jamieson. The Medical Superintendent reported: Remaining in hospital 31/8/40, 64; admitted during the month or September, 85; total treated dur 1 ng the month, 149; remaining in hospital 30/9/40, 64. The Matron’s report Istated: The highest number ol patients on any one day was 82, the lowest 61, and the average for the month 71.8. Number of operations, 49; number of X-rays, 48; screenings, nil; massage and physiotherapy treatments. 250. Holidays; Nurses Barlow and Murcott returned from leave. Sick leave: Nurses Quinn and Worthington. Appointments: Staff Nurse Taylor to be appointed Junior Sister as from 1/11/40. Resignation: Sisier Haack resigned 28/9/40. Mrs Rudge, relieving masseuse finished i 30/9/40. Sister Dodds commenced duties as relieving Night Sister from | 8/9/40. Sister Greenop resigning as
from 31/10/40. Domestic staff V. Smith resigned 23/9/40. The Department of Health .wrote confirming appointment of Miss A. F. Ramsay as Matron, and authorising ovedraft limit of £3OOO to 31/12/40. The treasurer's statement for month: Receipts £2350 5s sd, expenditure £2347 19s sd. Quarterly report, ending September 30: Receipts £11,799 7s 3d. expenditure £11,284 5s lid. Daily average occupied beds: Westland Hospital 69, Old People’s Home 14. The Farm report stated top-dressmg with lime and super had been done. There are 17 cows milking daily. The potato crop is lookmg »»e-l, and some are being hoed and moulded up. Early planted vegetables are showing good growth. The following produce was sold to the Institution: Milk (708 gallons) £6l 19s; cream (181 pints) £9 Is; eggs (161 dozen) £l2 Is 6d; vegetables (86ib) £1 Is 6d; total £B4 3s. Lawns have been mowed, edges trimmed, seedlings pricked out, shingl e scarified and the mam entrance has been gravelled and levelled in preparation for tar sealing. -
