RUNANGA NOTES

LOur Own Correspondent]. At last night’s meeting of the Kunanga branch of the Labour Party there was a good attendance of members, the President, Mr S. Morris, being in the chair. Arrangements were finalised for the Party’s forthcoming grand annual ball, the “Monte Carlo” priz e being fixed f.l Is, while lucky spot prizes were also allocated. The Ladies’, Committee reported that an admirable supply of edibles would be forthcoming for the supper. The branch then engaged in a discussion on the subject of “Money and Machinery,” which was opened with an address by l“tr M. Daly, of Greymouth, who traced tlie incidence of capitalism in Greece, and the Roman Empire, and its revival of the dawn of th e Renaissance. It was contended by the speaker that a more stable social system wouk! best b e attained by a planned economy, including restrictions on the employment of finance capital, limitation of imports, fixation of internal prices, and the regulation of ma chine production so as to allow more liberty and scope in industry for the human oersonality. Th e capacity or those directly engaged in the professions and industries to take the initiative and control’ their respective callings was suggested, survivals of the Guild system, under which there was such controls, being cited, including tlie medical and legal professional organisations. Members entered freely into an interesting discussion of the issues raised, including th c chairman (Mr Morris), Messrs Robertson, Oakley, Rafferty, Patterson, Deardon, O’Neill, Duggan, and Barnes. After a vote of thanks had been accorded the opening speaker, thp lady members of the Party provided an excellent supper, and a very enjoyable meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the chair.
