GREY FIRE BOARD
QUARTERLY MEETING. At the quarterly meeting of the Greymouth Fire Board lasi evening there wer e present Messrs W. 11. Parfitt (chairman). E. H. Box, F. S. Grant, R. J. Williams, and J. B. Kent, and the Superintendent (Mr P Deere), The chairman expressed the pleasure of members at the recovery of the Superintendent from his recent illness. The secretary, Westport Fire Board wrote asking for information regarding payments to firemen. Th e secretary’s reply was approved. A. R. Hislop Ltd. advised that the Board’s order for hose had been placed in England and would be filled on export license being granted by the British Government. The Internal Affairs Department advised the Minister’s approval,, of the Board's estimates for the "'year 1940-41. A. G. Gunn, session clerk, St. John’s Presbyterian Church wrote applying for the use of the Cobden Fir e Station on Sunday afternoons for Sunday School purposes. In reply to Mr Kent the Superintendent said that th e fire brigade would not be interferred with, as the room was only a meeting room. Mr Kent suggested that the opinion pf the Cobden foremen should be obtained. On the motion of Mr Williams It was left to the chairman, secretary and superintendent to deal with the matter and if granted that no rent be charged. Mr Grant asked if th e letting would lead to further requests. Mr Box: I don’t think so. Mr Kent said that the hall was previously a social hall and library, the room being used for meetings. U another place could be found, he did not think th e Fire Board’s property should be let. Mr Box said that it would not be difficult to draw the line.
The chairman said that the room was being used for patriotic meetings. Mr Kent said that members of the Board, at least in town, should have been asked their opinion. The chairman had exceeded his duties. The chairman said he did not think the Board would object to the hall being used for patriotic meetings. The chairman said that he had been asked if the Board would exhibit a banrow in the Patriotic ‘‘Barrow Day. Someone had to be in the barrow, someone else to push it. anu packets to be supplied. Mr Kent said that the Board should help, but members had to know vffiat they were doing. . In reply to Mr Grant, the chairman said that there would probably b e about 300 barrows. . Mr Grant: There might_b e a glut in the barrow market. Mr Kent moved that the Board enter a barrow. If the brigade members were enthusiastic they could get a good display. He suggested that £a be .allocated towards the cost ot packages for the barrow. Mr Kent’s resolution was seconded by Mr Box and carried. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT. Tho Superintendent (Mr P. Deere> reported for the period since last meeting as follows:—The Brigade haa two calls as follows:—May 7: Marshall’s Hairdressing Saloon, Mawheia Quay, 2.25 a.m. The place wXs badly damaged. Although the fire was out of the roof when the Brigade got the alarm, the Brigade made a good sate under the circumstances. Jmy- J -? L Bellis’s residence. Nelson Street, B.'.n a m The fire was confined to the kitchen and wash-house, but. ho smoke damaged the wallpaper in the other part of the house. Maintenance and repairs to th e stations and gear has been attended to and cverj , tbl "? is in good order. I have had the Blaketown Station pulled dow “’ a reel house built well back off rhe street, and placed a reel and gear therein. I also pulled down the reel house from under the bell tower m Tainui Street. The practices and fires have; been well attended. Fireman RWatson has gone into camp since last meeting and his place las noon tilled by Ex-Fireman F. Malloy. The report was adopted.
