Subversive Books notice to importers. WIDE RANGE COVERED. AUCKLAND, August 5. In its efforts to prevent the distribution oi subversive literature, the Government is now directing atien•iion to the importing source. Importers of periodicals, books, and other literature have been notified by the Colla tor of Customs, Mr F. N. Abercrcmt’e that it has been decided that the importation of subversive literature is not to be permitted. Delivery will not be given of any such literature which may be imported under import licences. Import licences already granted for the importation of books or papers are subject to this restriction. The nature of publications which should be considered as subversive is indicated in the Public Safety Emergency Regulations, states the collector in his notification to importers. The definition of “subversive” covers a very wide range. It not only applies to anything likely to interfere with the success of His Majesty’s Forces or those of his allies by land, sea, or air. or their training, recruitment, or administration, but also to any statement intended or likely to interfere with the national effort by disruption of the morale of the civil population cr His Majesty’s Forces. Furthermore, it has application to a statement intended or likely to cause undue alarm to the public or to any person or persons in relation to the public safety or to the war. it embraces anything likely to cause unlawful resistance or interference with the enforcement of any order or any law of New Zealand relating to the administration of justice. It affects any statement prejudicing or interfering with the manufacture, production, output, supply delivery, or carriage by land, sea, or air, of any goods or article, or the carrying on of any services required by reason of or in connection with the war.
