SWORD OF SPIRIT

ENGLISH CATHOLICS Support of War Effort ' [British Official Wireless] RUGBY, August 1. Cardinal Hinsley, launching the Catholic movement named "The Sword of the Spirit,” which is designed to support the conflict into which Britain has been forced, said: “We are not inspired by narrow patriotism which limits our Christian charity to the red patches on the world’s map where waves the British flag. On the contrary, we will never lose sight of the kinship and love which ought to bind human beings to one another.

“The declared purpose of the leaders of the State or party which threatens us is finally to de-Chris-tianise Europe, and "to establish a pagan system of racialism,” said His Eminence. “We Catholics’ in this country will combat a doctrine so radically opposed to our faith. We will fight to the death against their violent designs. Our country is in peril from these wily foes, strong in mechanised numbers. Our island has become a fortress, defended -by our seamen, soldiers, and airmen, and by men from both Hemisphere, from Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Africa. To' these brave men who have sprung to our arms and dedicated their lives to protect us and to guard our freedom, we owe our admiration and gratitude.”
