Works Reports At Thursday’s meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council, the Works Committee reported as follows:— Visits were paid to Cardwell, Monroe, Ward, Turumaha, Shakespeare, Nelson, Blake and Reid Streets, Preston Rpad and the town belt north, and the following are thC\recommendations of the, committee. That 18m pipe s to the value of £55 be procured to complete the piping, of the open drain in Cardwell Street between Bright Street and Nelson Quay. That Mr H. Traill, Ward Street, be given one month’s notice to shift his motor garage to meet the terms of the Building Permit issued to him, and that, failing his acting accordingly, legal action be taken, to obtain compliance. That the Borough Engineer’s action in proceeding with the relaying of the Marlborough Street and of the sewer in that part of Shakespeare Street at present being reformed. be approved, and that tn.e whole length be relaid as far as may be advisable. That th& Borough Engineer prepare an estimate of the cost of 'extending the water reticulation into Mount Street between Chapel and Moss Streets. The crushing plant was also visited and means to be adopted to increase the output were discussed, . l The report was adopted. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Borough Engineer (Mr. A. Fairmaid) reported:—ln continuation of the reformation of Shakespeare Street the south eastern side has been excavated to formation level to Manborough Street and the north westernside has been treated likewise throughout about one half of tne length. At the Marlborough Street end the sewer was uncovered ana found to be in bad order and it has been relaid yvith 9 inch pipes for 346 feet at the Marlborough Street end, and a further length is being relaid with 12 inch pipes, the original sewer being 15 inches in diameter. The reformation of Lombard Street has been completed and Lower Gresson Street in the vicinity of the Railway Goods Sheds has been scarified and metalled as required, preparatory to tar sealing in due course. Concrete kerbing and channelling has been completed in the south western sHie of Winnie Street from the angle to the north western side of Kilgoui Road and on the north western sia® between Perotti and Lydia Streets. At Shakespeare Street bridge the can- ; tilever footway and approaches have been completed. In Mackay Street, In front, of the premises of Messrs Wool worth’s Ltd., a water table crossing cycle stand to accommodate 7 bicycler has been erected. The formation of Monroe Street from Firth Street to Range Creek is nearing completion. The sewer into the Nelson Street area on the north western side of the railway has been completed except foi a short break at the septic tank at the Technical School Hostel, which break will be made good as soon as the system is ready to receive the flow from the Hostel, which readings awaits completion of three manholes in the intercepting sewer below tns terrace in Cowper Street. Work on the main sewer to serve the Marsden Road area is now proceeding m Marsden Road where the connection to the sewer already laid in that area will be made at the intersection of Palmerston Street. On Turumaha Street storm water sewer work ’has been completed to Murray Street and is now proceeding north westwards from that street towards Tainut Street. On the main outfall sewer across -Karoro Lake from Franklin Street to Preston Road all pipes delivered have been laid out along the line and preliminary work for the main operation is well in hand To date, progress in underground sewer laying has been as Size of pipe 42in,.for July. —;..36in, 902 feet; 30in, . —; 24in, —; 21m, 18in, —lsin, 27ft; 12in 581 ft; 9in, 341 ft: 6in, 165 ft; 4in, 355 ft; Total for July 2,421 ft .45: mis. To date 51,165 ft 9.7 mis, The laying of the 18in sewer extension across Spring Street and thfe town belt north has been complet'd, the total length laid being 312 feet, j Manholes have yet to be constructed

to complete the work. A bad blockage in the Pukatahi Street sewer, eastwards from Alexander Street, has been cleaned, a damaged sewer crossing in Smith Street, and a damaged sewer connection in High Street have been repaired. A manhole has been constructed upon the outfall' sewer f from the intersection of Lombard ana Herbert Streets, and storm water sumps have been constructed, one in Herbert and one in Lombard Streets. The open drain along the north western side of the Abattoir paddock near the mouth of Sawyers Creek has been cleaned out. In Cardwell Street the 18 inch pipe drain has been extended for a distance of 40 feet and a manhole has been constructed at the junction of the 6ft drain recently laid south-eastwards between Bright Street and Nelson Quay. The Reservoir has been kept full by an average daily pump run of 13.56 hours. A total 6f 19 water closets have been installed during the past month, 11 in Bl'aketown and 8 in the old sewered area. The report was adopted the Mayoi saying that the people were beginning to take the Committe’s warning seriously and,to connect with th e swer. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee recommended as follows: —That accounts amounting to £2,838 13s 2d as scheduled be passed for payment. That accounts paid since last meeting amounting to £3,742 17s Id District Fund Account, and £1,626 10s 4d Sewerage Loan be approved. That the Gas Manager’s report be received and aaopted, and that the Gas Manager be congratulated on the sales made. That a letter from the District Land Registrar, Hokitika, regarding the subdivision of Lot 42, D.P. 465 of Part Res. 51 in the name of Elery be received and a reply be sent stating that the Council does not require Lot 3 for street purposes. That a letter from the Health Inspector, Greymouth, requesting that a requisition be served on Mrs B. Cain to carry out certain work at premises ownen by her and occupied by Mrs Bromley be referred to the Works Committee. That a letter from the Cobden Branch of the Patriotic'Committee issuing a challenge to the Council to a “Wheel Barrow Day’’ to be held on Saturday 27th instant to raise funds for the patriotic Committee be received and that the Council accept the challenge, subject to the competition being held on tljeir week-end day in August. That a letter from Mrs J. Gray, 22 Peel Street, Cobden, requesting that some improvements be carried out to the road between Nelson Quay and Peel Street be referred to the Engineer with power to act. That a letter from Mrs A. Dury requesting that some improvements be carried out to th e footpath in Weld Street be referred to the Engineer with power to act. That a letter from Mr E. B. E. Taylor, on behalf of Mr, E. J. Rundle regarding the flooding of the latter’s property bo received and that a reply be sent stating that the matter is being fully_considered and that the Council cannot carry out the work until the loan is raised (without prejudice). That a letter from the Department of Housing Construction, regarding the footpaths and Berms, Carriageway, Kerb Crossings, be received, and that the Department be informed (that the Council approve of the sft grass berms, on the understanding that same are kept in order; in connection with the carriageway that the Department be asked to tar seal the full width, and that the standard crossings be put in. That th e estimates for the year 1940-41 as produced to-night be aprpoved. That Mr R. W. Hall receive an additional £1 per week until March 31st next, or until completion of the Sewerage Scheme whichever be the earlier. That a 6in bench grinder be purchased from Messrs A. H. Hislop Ltd., Wellington at £lO 7s 6a nett. That a letter from Mr T. O. Beirne. Union Delegate, requesting thtat free coke be supplied to Gas Stokers, or else that coke be supplied at cost price, be received and no action taken. That a letter from the secretary, Labourers’ Union, Wellington. re. the Wellintgon District Bocal Bodies Labourers be received. That a letter from J. Conaghan District Representative, Labourers’ Union, forwarding proposals and amendments re tht Greymouth Municipal Employees Industrial Agreement be held over pending the decision of the Court now sitting. That a letter from Mr D J. Evans, re the Transparencies of Greymouth used at the Centennial

Exhibition, that a reply be sent stating that the Council will be pleased to take the model dredge, and that Canterbury be given a loan of it, Ji it will be prepared to pay cost of freight etc. The report was adopted.
