The Pururi is due from Nelson during the week-end to load coal for New Plymouth’. The Waipahi is due from Wellington to-morrow with general cargo, and loads coal for Lyttelton. The Kakapo is expected from Wellington to-morrow afternoon to load coal for Wellington and Napier. The Wingatui is due from Wellington on Friday to load coal for return to Wellington. . The Pukeko is expected from Wellington to-morrow night to load coal for return to the same port.
Personal: \ . Mr W. Spence, accompanied by Mr Jack Daily, left for Timaru to-day, i to be present at his father’s funeral. | Mr and Mrs F. Truman, of Christ- ' church, are visiting Westport as the ! guests of Mr and Mrs C. Bailantyne, Fonblanque Street. Mr Rupert Harvey, examiner in elocution for the Trinity College ot Music, arrived in Westport to-day. Pte. J. Alexander, of Burnham Camp, is due to arrive in Westport on Saturday morning. The death took place at Timaru on Sunday of Mr Scully, proprietor or the Shamrock Hotel. Deceased spent ‘most of his life in Invercargill. He is survived by his wife and live sons. Mr M. B. Scully, of Westport, is a son of deceased.’ Sympathy is extended to the bereaved. Mr W. Spence, proprietor of tne Prince of Wales Hotel, Westport, received word of the sudden death Timaru of his father. Deceased was 56 years of age, and is survived bj his wife and two sons, to whom all sympathy is extended. The death occurred at 5 o’clock yesterday, at the age of 90 years and three months, of Mrs Powick, of Brougham Street, an old and highlyesteemed resident of Westport. Deceased was a native of Nelson, where she was born on August 18, 1850. She moved to Blenheim, where her mai - riage took place. In 1897 on the da.v of Queen Victoria’s jubilee, Mr and Mrs Powick made their home in Westport. Mr Powick passed away on July 30, 1923. Of a family of eight, live are still living—Adjutant Powick, of the Salvation Army (Wellington), Joseph (Hastings), Len (Westport), Mrs J. Harder (Westport), and Mrs Young (Opotiki). To all in their bereavement the sympathy of the community is extended.
Wedding Beils: A quiet but pretty wedding _ was solemnised on July 20 at St. Johns Church, Westport, of Regina May, only daughter of Mrs H. Jenkins, of Wangapeka Valley, and the late Mr H. Jenkins, to Thomas Kitchener, eldest son of Mrs W. Tait, Wellington, and the late Mr T. Broderick. The Rev. Gorney officiated. The bride who entered the church on the arm of her brother, Mr W. Jenkins, wore a becoming gown of white satin cut on semi-empire lines. Her embroidered tulle veil was held with a halo of orange blossom. She carried a shower bouquet of lilies and maidenhair fern. The bride was attended by her sister-in-law, Mrs R. Jenkins, as matron of honour. The bridegroom was attended by Mr T. J'enkins as best man. The reception was held at the residence of the bride’s cousin, Mrs Roy McLean, Queen Street. The happy couple later left by private car on their honeymoon, the bride travelling in a grey tailored costume with navy accessories. Patriotic Fund:
The Mayor (Mr J. M. Robertson? acknowledges the sum of £2 2s from Mr Charles Perkins; £5 5s from the Buller Rugby Union and Aero Club, per D. Gemmill, for the Patriotic Funds.
Seddon Shield: i Mr Coulter, of Christchurch, has been appointed as referee in the Seddon Shield match against Marlborough on Saturday. M. Breed was asked by the selectors to join in training for the Seddon Shield match on Saturday. His Worship the Mayor, Mr J. M. Robertson, Mr J. McEnaney (president of the Buller Rugby Union) and other officials will welcome the Marlborough Seddon Shield team and supporters at the Old Boys’ ball on Friday night.
Soccer: Following are the results of games played during the week-end: Williams Cup, first round —Thistle 4, Bachelor 2; Stockton 3, Ngakawau 2. McArthur Cup, for schools —Stockton _, Millerton 2. Owing to the Chatham Cup match at the coming week-end, there will be no fixtures.
A special, meeting of the Association was heid at Millerton on July 2< to finalise arrangements for the Chatham Cup South Island final between Thistle and Western. Mr H. Campbell was in the chair. It was decided to play the match at Millerton, but it is not definite yet whether the game will be played on Saturday or Sunday. An effort is being made to avoid a clash with the Seddon Shield Rugby fixture. Mr R. Robertson was appointed referee, and Messrs W. Shearer and J. Tyler linesmen. Messrs G. Plummer H. Campbell, R. Fleming and C. Barnes were appointed gatekeepers. At the close of this meeting, general business was transacted. It was decided to challenge Westland for the Peter Dawson Cup. It was decided to rescind the decision to play the final of the Toll Cup at Ngakawau, and to play the match at Denniston. The withdrawal of Ngakawau juniors from the competition was received with regret. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to Mr Peggie foi’ the use of the meeting room. The Western (Christchurch) teara will arrive at Millerton on Friday at 6 p.m. A social and dance will be tendered the visitors.
