LIQUOR PRIZE
Not to be Allowed FOR PATRIOTIC FUNDS. WELLINTON, July. 29. “Instances have been brought to. my notice of the sale of alcoholic liquor by Dutch auction, in ‘mystery’| parcels, by raffles, and by other means at public and private functions arranged for the purpose of raising funds for patriotic and other purposes,." stated the Commissioner of Police/ Mr Cummings, to-day. “Sale of liquor by these means is a breach of the licensing laws, and renders the seller and responsible officials liable to heavy penalties. No doubt, persons who may have disposed of liquor in this way have done so in good faith, and were unaware that they were breaking the law, and* were actuated by zeal for the success of the endeavour made to assist some] worthy object. But however worthy the object, it must be understood that furtherance of its cause by the em-| ployment of illegal methods cannot! be sanctioned. It is therefore desired to inform the public that dis-1 posal of liquor by the methods mentioned is not permissable, and action will have to be taken against any person offending in future.”
